Angles

When i first started doing magic i used to avoid magic that involved angles, i wanted my audience to be able to stand all around me and have everyone see the same effect as it should be.

Lately i have decided that this is a shame, so many beautifull effects out there involve mastering angles. Now i dont have a problem with practicing my angles and adjusting everything according to the trick iam peforming, this is not what this thread is about.

I wanted to ask people for advice on street peformances. What happens if your peforming for a group of people, but someone not from that group walks by you at the wrong angles which reveals the a trick?

For example if iam peforming the balducci levitation for a group of people, and some guy walks by behind me, this reveals the trick and he points it out to the other group, ruining the effect for everybody

I can think of millions of risks of working with angles even if you master where your spectators should be. Any tips or past experiences people are willing to share?

Adjust your angles accordingly.

For example, if I am about to do a trick where somone can't be on my deep left side, I would probably take a fews steps back so that they are infront of me.

It's all about auidence management.

As Allan said, you need to adjust to the position of your audience. For example, if you were doing the balducci levitation, you may want to do it in an alley, against walls, etc. to make sure everyone is watching from the right angle.

I would say this question falls more under crowd control than angles.

The first thing a performing magician should master is commuicating the concept of "LOOK", be it through body language or verbiage. Make it seem to them that they get a better view within the angles and constantly direct their attention.

and if someone does sneak around, find a way to cover. Balducci Levitation would require a drop. just drop and say you couldn't hold it any longer.

Another thing is, learn multiple ways to do something. Take levitation for example. there's a ton of different ways that have a ton of different angles. If someone steps out and wants to see a different angle, switch up the method and show them from a different angle. then they'll really lose it.

i know exactly what you mean, lately i have being working on king rising levitation. I did balducci to a group of people and they werent impressed, they said theyre 7 yr old sister can do that, then i switched to king rising and they flipped.

aaah so satisfying to freak people out :)

although my main concern originaly was if someone who you are not peforming for, someone who is just walking by in the street sees a revealing angle, how often do you think they will actually tell everybody what they saw and tell your adience your secret, and how should we as magicians react to this?

In a great quote by mitch hedgerg:

"You can't please all people all the time...I mean, last night those people were at my show...":D

the more you worry about it, the worse it wil be.
