Book Review on D. Robbins "Stars of Magic"

First off before anything else I want to say "Wow"! This is a gem in the rough and deserved its own review.

At first purchasing the book which happens to be in non-print status as of right now I thought the simple cover was a mock up of some dusty hard back in my grandfathers attic. The book itself is blue and a simply printed title "Stars of Magic", but the book came with high referall from a good friend.

So back to the review. I opened the book and to my discovery its a collaboration of some wonderful and original magic of some of the greatest magicians in the history of magic. Here's the line-up.

- John Scarne
- Dai Vernon
- Bert Allerton
- Leo Horowitz
- Jarrow
- Francis Carlyle
- Dr. Jacob Daley
- Slydini
- Ross Bertram
- Malini

Now without getting too carried away I wanted to take the time and read the book throughly before making an opinion on the book.

Some of the effects included range from:

-John Scarne

Classic Ball Routine - A bewildering series of magical appearences and dis- appearences of small paper balls great for an impromptu effect.

Triple Coincidence - An effect using two decks with different backs using a cards across method with a triple knock out ending very awesome.

Silver and Copper - A classic except this one uses no gimmicked coins just what you have in your pocket, this ones perfect for any coin magician.

- Dai Vernon

Triumph - Another classic with a very diabolical technique of shuffling the cards.

Cutting the Aces - An effect where all four aces are placed in various spots in the deck and using a series of fancy cuts each ace is found under impossible conditions this is worth the price of the book alone.

SpellBound - This one is considered one of Vernons pet mysteries using an English copper penny and Half dollar impromptu with no gimmicks.

Kangaroo Coins - A great four coins thru the table routine.

Impromptu Cups and Balls - A cups and balls routine using everyday objects.

Ambitious Card - A great classic if you dont know it buy this book.

Mental Card Miracle - S spectator is given a free thought of choice of five cards and without palming that thought of card appears inside you jacket, oh the possibillities.

Ring on the Wand - A classic self explained.

Slow Motion 4 Aces - If you like Reset then you'll love this one.

The Travelers - A mystery where all four Aces dis-appear from the deck and re-appear in four different pockets on your person.

- Bert Allerton

Pump Room Phantasy - A awesome display of card handling where both red Aces are placed on the top and bottom of the deck and then placed into the middle and they just jump back to their original places again over and over until a surprise ending Transpos them into the black Aces.

Bamboozle - I now know where Prophet and Burn originated from. You got to love this handling.

- Leo Horowitz

Malini-Bey Chink a Chink -A Max Malini based Matrix effect using Sugar Cubes.

Egyption Ball Mystery - An effect using one red ball and one white ball and a silk. An great Transpo effect for walk around or stage.

- Jarrow

Hanky Panky - I really liked this one. A trick where four spectators are used two holding a hanky out by its corners and two other spectators holding the corners of a newspaper over the hanky and a cigarette is burned through both the hanky and newspaper and when removed the hanky is left un-touched.

- Francis Carlyle

Decapitiation - An effect using a burned and restored book of matches.
Homing Card - A signed card to pocket routine very tricky.
Wrist Watch Steal - Yes another watch stealing routine but WOW this ones nice.

- Dr. Jacob Daley

Cards up Sleeve - This one I will leave as a surprise. haha

The Itenerant Pasteboards - An insantanious transpo of two cards.

The Cavorting Aces - Another Ace tranpso but this one can be used for stage.

- Slydini

Cigarette Miracle - A torn and restored cigarette effect.

Flight of the Paper Balls - This is a exactly how it sounds.

Flyaway Coin Routine - Very cool coins handling effect.

There is a number of other effects including a cool Malini card stab effect. My friend has about five more of these books left if your interested just PM me and Ill give you a link to purchase the book.

My thoughts on books over DVDs vary. Reading allows you to feel every move the performer intended to be used as in a DVD its possible to miss these things so if your interested in having your magic grow this book is a must have.

Hey man, great review!

I know you said that it's out of print, but if I were attempt to transcend that little speed bump, where might I procure a copy?

I think that the original handling of Truimph is still hands down the best version in the table!

Cheers,

Thanks Medifro I was almost thinking with the amount of views versus actual responses that this book has been looked past without its most updo respect that it deserves. You're right on the triumph routine its the most impacting handling of the routine yet in my opinion. The Professor lives on.

I just wanted to point out that this is not a "diamond in the rough" this is a diamond that everyone knows, or should know about, and if they don't well they are missing out.

I appreciate your input but not everyone knows what you know but there are some that may know more than you. If you would like to talk privately then maybe I adjust your way of thinking of me or maybe not. Your responses sound a little pre-judgemental.

@Shane: In your post you said:

This is a gem in the rough

This would imply that this book is somehow "hidden" or "waiting to be discovered", when in fact this book is established as one of the best magic books.

I was just trying to clear that up in my previous post, but looking back on my post I realize it is cluttered and it would be difficult to able to decipher what I was trying to get at. Sorry.

.
Its one of the best indeed, however, there was recently a thread about older books, and many members made it clear that they don't buy such magic material.

Its a very known gem, but ( and I'm talking strictly about younger ( hate to sterotype, but you get the idea ) online magic communities, which are WAY different than "real world" ones ), who thinks about buying it?

:)
