Card Fanning

I've been trying to get a basic thumb fan down but for some reason it just isn't working out. Everytime I try to do it only a few cards fan out and the rest stay together in a pile at the end. Any thoughts for someone new to the fanning game?

I heard of something cald "fanning powder" to help out with fanning with older cards. Is there really any truth with that? Because I plan to incorporate fanning in a few of my tricks.

Fanning Powder is one of those things that will help a little bit, but all in all, it is just better to get a new deck. This might sound whacked, but I get a new deck ever other week. I tend to practice with Bikes and perform with my higher line decks like Arcanes or Vipers. Some times I throw in the Propagandas when I feel like it. Nothing beats a new deck, plus it gives you a lot of cards to use on throw away tricks once they wear out their fanning powers. (Such as signing a card, folding a card, ripping a card, this list could go on for ever).

Quick side note though, does anyone else get annoyed when they see a magician performing a trick and he bust out an old Bikes deck only to see that half the cards have signatures on them??? I just think it looks sloppy...

Looks like i'll be buying cards a lot more often now. XD

(Might keep some fanning powder on the side though just cause it sounds fun)

I have myself never seen that. But yeah that does sound really sloppy. Not to mention it probably takes away some legitimacy from their tricks in the eyes of the spectator. It might cause a " I bet the signatures are how he is doing it." mentality.

Yeah I think that I really need a lot of practice. Cause the cards i'm using are two week old Centurions. XD

Yup, kind of old. And since you're a beginner, I would think that you don't know how to keep a deck "fresh". I think you should buy Aladdins or Arccos because they have the plastic coating that you need to keep a deck fresh. You probably have some sweeeeeeeaty hands. I knew that when I began, my hands were INCREDIBLY sweaty because I was so nervous to hold a deck.

The thing that really helps when you have a brand new deck would be the fact that it's really smooth. With this, you'd easily grasp the mechanics behind each fan you're learning, and thus improving your learning process. At the same time, this contributes to making it easier for you to apply these mechanics to some of your other decks that may not be so new. I've never used fanning powder, but I've heard brilliant things about it, so why not try it out too.

wait! fanning powder helps a little bit?! you could take a deck that is 2 years old.. powder it up and it will fan great.... so really trust me fanning powder will do all the work for you...
of yourse u could buy a new deck.. but if it's totaly new..it's is to slick... you don't have controll over it if you are not used to fanning... but if you powder it up... it' fans even better and you have good controll over the deck... trust me.. try it once... you life will change!
