Try to make the Impossible, possible. That is was magic is all about.

And dont try to force your self to think of ideas, they will just come. Like comedians, some of their gags they dont think of, they just come to them. You'll see something one day and say, I was that were possible, and there we go, make it possible.

Cheers, Tom

I think a good first step is to think about what this effect involves. Is it a card trick, coin trick, mental trick, etc. Then start brainstorming. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to be creative.

Well, I haven't really created a solid and perfect effect yet but I have ideas and concepts that I work on. For me, I try to think of the effect first, like how is it going to look like, what do I want to happen, and what I want to be able to do. After that, I go and think of the method. It's like working backwards.

Generally, I'm comfortable with cards but sometimes I come up with ideas that involve other items like rubberbands, etc. I myself would like to create effects that don't necessarily use conventional items like cards and coins. I'd like to be able to use fire for example, and also do things far from the usual pick a card tricks like impossible penetrations and transpositions/transformations of objects.

I write down all my ideas in a notebook, like many others do. The others are right too, don't think too hard. I force myself sometimes to finish an effect right then and there but then I think to myself that there's always time tomorrow, that it'll enetually come to me. What I dream of creating may seem pretty ambitious, but I motivate myself by thinking that magic itself was ambitious when it was first conceptualized; so does every other worthwhile trick out there. They wouldn't have happened if someone didn't work for it, that's what I say.

Just keep going at it. We all are.

Why is everyone trying to sell their products these days? What ever happened to trying to get gigs?

You can't force yourself to create an effect. Just play around with objects. And don't sell your items just for money. Seems like your just trying to make some money.

Nowadays it's quite hard to invent something that wasn't invented before. At least in my opinion.

I I'm trying to be creative and trying to think up my own stuff like tricks, moves etc. I don't wanna market them, I'm ready to share my ideas with everyone for free, but basically someone done it before.

I think a place where everyone could share their ideas about their "inventions" in magic and check if it's a fresh idea would be cool.

So you openly admit you aren't creative, you need other people to come up with ideas for you but you still feel the need to sell some stuff?

That's not how it works, believe me. If you want money just get a job.

Exactly!

If you come up with something, use it. Gigs, magic related meetings, competitions...

Well, you know it's nice to be a part of the history by creating a specific move or a trick.

It's not about fame or money, because it's temporary, it's about leaving something and practically become "immortal".

I agree, that idea is nice.

But you won't invent that move or plot that becomes a classic by inventing something and immediately publishing it. Perhaps some magician finds it, and thinks that the idea is good, and plays with it for a couple of years, and releases an improved and renamed version of it. Someone else who took the time becomes immortal.

Or, more likely, it's immediately forgotten.

True, true.

But when it comes to reinventing and developing certain ideas/methods, well it's a normal process. But I think till you give credit and respect the creators before your turn it's all good.

Of course, I agree totally. But I'm trying to say, that magician should develop ideas for years, or possibly even decades, before releasing anything. Otherwise, some else does that, and you get credit as the original idea, but handling is totally revamped by someone else.
