David Forrest's// Colour Burn
http://www.full52.com/colour_burn.htm

The Effect

A blue backed deck is removed from its case. The deck is spread and your spectators are asked to call out the names of some cards that they see. You then take the named cards and, one by one, begin to magically change their back colour from blue to red! Offering a better look at the technique you announce that you will change the back of another card...

...IN SLOW MOTION!

With a gentle wave of your hand, the card begins to visibly change. The card actually appears to change as you move your hand back and forth over it! You pause halfway - the card under your hand is half blue and half red! Slowly, you complete the colour change, visually changing the remaininder of the blue card to red. The card is now fairly shown on both sides - it has completely changed to red!. But, you're not done...

With a snap of your fingers the entire deck instantly changes to red before their already disbelieving eyes. They pick their jaws up - you move onto your next miracle!

Cost

£12.95 available on Macs and PC's..

Difficulty

(1-Self working), 2-(1or2 beginner sleights), 3-(moderate sleights, practice needed but not too difficult), 4-(very difficult expert sleights and presentation needed), 5-(not practical, impossible for real life but good for video)

I'd say a 2.5, closer to a 2 really, it will take some practice and mirror work, but if you put in the time, then you'll have it down. The one real sleight needed will be known by everyone reading this :)

Review

i love it, but lets get onto that later.
Technically:

The download itself was great, quick and easy, paypal which really helps. What you download is a small flashplayer 'package'. It contains several chapters which are:
1. INTRO
2. COLOUR BURN: THE EFFECT
3. COLOUR BURN: THE GAFF
4. COLOUR BURN: THE SET-UP
5. COLOUR BURN: THE WORKINGS
6. COLOUR BURN: THE CLEAN UP
7. BONUS EFFECT: PRINT RUN - THE EFFECT
8. BONUS EFFECT: PRINT RUN - THE WORKINGS
9. BONUS EFFECT: MOVE DETAILS
10. FURTHER THOUGHTS
11. CREDITS
12. OUTRO

It is very easy to use, giving you the freedom to flick through the chapters and everything is explained.
The download comes as a zip file, but if you go onto davids website, it tells you everything you need to get for the download to work, and its all free plus i had the programs anyway.
IMO, all downloads should be like this, its a breeze, and crystal clear quality..

The trick

The trick itself is pure gold. I happened to have a spare £10 and i'mso glad i chose this. Davids teaching is clear, and he's cut out anything you dont need and your left with what you get. The effect looks great, in front of the mirror you really are wiping your hand over a card and having its back change colour. The first part to the routine is fun and simple, but of course what your buying this for is the slow-mo colour change, which looks so good. The beginning of the colour changing deck routine includes spec. involvement, and is not just filler, but hits hard when done smoothly and really baffles spectators, especially when theyre not expecting it.. oh and it will require a little prep beforehand.

This trick will require practice to become smooth at it, but it is worth every minute of it, a few hours will probably be enough for most card-handlers, and this trick could be done by coin handlers, mentalists, jugglers, acrobats, leprecauns and even daniel garcia ;)(kidding, i love him really) its that easy!

The gimmick:

The gimmick itself is simple to make, i dont doubt for a second that anyone has not got the right materials, you may not have one thing, but the trick can still be performed as normal, as david says it will work just as well.

The gimmick itself is not incredible, but what you can do with it is. It's very versatile, and can be applied to not just changing the backs, but printing cards, wiping colour off to blank cards, and general colour changes.. It's a simple but clever idea, and i'll put my hand up in saying that the slow-mo change fooled me.
The gimmick is easy to carry around, and nothing to worry about if your a card handler.

Bonus effect// print run

This itself would not be an opener unlike colour burn, but more of an effect to slip into the middle of a routine, but still a good one at that. It utilises the same gimmick, and it looks really magical. The handling could admittedly be improved, but this effect requires less prep, and looks really good, definitely as good as the main effect colour burn. Its an effect that is more of a 'pick a card trick' which may not excite people as much as this colour changing deck theme, but it shouldnt put you off, its a great add on.

Theres not much more to say really... everything on the site is true, david seems to be a really nice guy, and this is a great trick if you ask me. For the price, your getting 2 effects, a versatile gimmick, and a very high quality download, at this price of £12.95, its a steal to me..

Pro's:
Versatile method
Amazing colour change
2 effects
Easy to download and a fair price
No real reason not to like it!

Cons:
At the current exchange rate, the price for american's seems more than it is
The handling is a little iffy for print run, but nothing you can't fix
there's a small setup, not really a con..
plus, the theme music at the start gets stuck in your head:cool:

So as you can see, there not really con's... So what are you waiting for? 'this, is colour burn..' I'm hoping we see more from him in the future... Any questions, PM me or post, ill answer anything i can... =D

10/10!!

oh heres some testamonials...

i agree with the TnR gimmick, and that trick to me looks unnatural, but to laymen this is fantastic, its visual and ive not had it worked out once yet, im sorry you feel that way..

and to answer the other question, you have 2 cards freely selected, you show there backs as blue, and 1 by 1 they turn red, you then offer to slow the technique down and do it in slow motion, and of course this kills, you then take the changed card, show the top card as red, and then turn over the card, snap your fingers, and its changed...

im going to be honest, like all colour changing deck routines, like blindsided for example, you can't show all the cards... but you take a blue deck out of a blue box, you then spread through and take out 2 blue cards, you then turn the deck over and turn a blue card into a red one, and the card under it is blue. you then turn over that card, they see a blue card, and turn it over again and everything is red, it is very visual, and the specs wont suspect straight from the start 'oh i wonder if that deck in the blue box really is blue..', so yeh get it, and i forgot to mention there is a clean up, but its explained and is very simple, plus you can use it as an opener and then stick the deck away and say, 'actually, lets do a coin trick or w.e instead' do one, and then take out the 'transformed' red deck, using a switch or w.e

hope this helped

Actually, I've used my TnR gimmick twice and the only reason I don't perform it more is because I'm not a huge fan of destroying cards everyday. It's a special thing to pull out when I want to blow someone over.

I can't say anything about the Colour Burn gimmick, as I don't own it. But Joe says it gets "REALLY good reactions.". It'd be awesome if he could get a live performance video up of it.

Of course, this is just my opinion too. :)

the slow mo change does get really nice reactions, i cant get a video atm, sorry about that, but trust me, it is so visual, and there really not expecting it after the first 2... some specs arent right for this trick, but it really is worth the money, its more visual than a lot of the card tricks i use, and its not a gimmick you can get caught with if you spend a while practicing and it will last you a life time...

so its not the best trick in the world.. but its definitely one of the best instant downloads ive ever bought, and ive bought A LOT!, trust me..

Colour Burn is an awesome trick. Its an incredible moment of magic with playing cards - something rare and wonderful. After working it into my existing colour changing deck opener, its now the opener to my close up act and everyone who I've performed it to has reacted with amazement.

While I think the effect itself is good I think the principle is the real piece of gold you get from your purchase. This is one of those tricks where you can branch off and come up with something wildly new or greatly alter the handling to something way different and original. I fell that while this effect is very visual the clean up isn't exactly the easiest and heat from ultragaff while slightly less visual may be better and far easiar to clean up.

I do feel that a trick like marked or second chance from ultragaff may look better using the color burn principle then the original handlings

Just to add some more thoughts to this now that I've had a chance to play more with the principle. R.E. cleanup - there isn't much to it and especially if you customise the handling you can do away with some of the problems. Here's a hint - Card College volume 5...

I have applied the colour burn principle to a great little trick - a card merely thought of prints on a double blank card; first the back in slow motion, then the face in a flash. So the trick is pretty simple - spec thinks of a card and it materialises on a double blank. Very good fun!

Certainly something you can get creative with. Great, practical, real world material.
David.
