Derren Brown Books

Hi

I'm pretty interested in mentalism and the psychology of magic and misdirection and I'm also a big fan of Derren Brown. I already have his book Tricks Of The Mind which i love and took a lot from.

I want to buy one of his other books but they're pretty expensive from where I can get them and just want to ask if there's anybody lucky enough to own both Pure Effect and Absolute Magic which one is better for learning more about improving my "flow", naturalness and performance skills as opposed to just new tricks and forces.

Also any other recommendations for books that teach similar things is welcome.

Thanks

If you're interested in using some skills that Derren Brown does, I would also recommend checking out some NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) books, as they will definitely help you out. But if you're after routines that give off an illusion that you have/use the skills, I would highly recommend you checking out his "Devil's Picturebook" DVD -- you can find that on his website.

Have fun searching, his material is amazing.

P.S. I would also suggest having a look at his 1999 London Lecture VHS tape -- it's fantastic! :)

There's a copy of Absolute Magic on ebay for <$60.00 (which is the lowest I've seen it go for in a while). I've actually semi-given up on the purchase (and I'm sure whoever the high bidder is will appreciate me pointing this out), but when the book sells on places such as the magic cafe, it tends to run for the $150 mark.

That's not to say the auction won't go up. I'm semi-watching it and its got like 2+ days left...

i have those books (pure effect and absolute magic), and i find both of them awesome
in the 1st one you cand find a LOT of derren's thoughts...and also contains smoke, that is one of the best derrens routines.
the second one talks about theory on close up magic, that is very important to make your performance memorable

If you like to know some of NLP, you can read richard bandler or john grinder books, they ve created the neurolinguistic programing

Another book that derren talk a lot about on pure effect is ian rowland's "the full facts of cold reading"

And on his DVD (the devil's picturebook) you can find exelent material with cards

theres also a dvd of a lecture, i dont find much more on that dvd, but in the end have a performance of reminiscence that is awesome (this routine if im not wrong was published on the 1st edition of pure effect, but he remove it from the others editions)

You can also look for luke jermay material, but i find most of it not real world
What i can really recomend to you is to wath the andy nymans dvd "get nyman"
both luke and andy are derrens consultants to his shows

the only book that i havent read yet is trick of the mind, i have to buy it

well hope this help

I wasn't aware there was a lecture video I'm definately going to look into that. I think I'm going to go for Pure Effect if I can get it and I'm definately going to look at the other things and probably get some of those if I can afford it.

Thanks for helping guys.

Pick up both books if you can, if you are serious about your magic then the price of these books is not a limiting factor.

p.s word has it he didnt even write trick of the mind it was ghost written. Personally i believe this to probably be true however ive yet to read it myself.

If he didn't write Tricks of the Mind then the ghost-writer did a pretty good job of imitating his style. From what I know of Mr Brown, I don't think he would have had it written for him.

Anyway, more on-topic, if you're interested in NLP/hypnosis/suggestion type stuff, then a lot of Kenton Knepper's work is good (especially Wonder Words), and if you want a more broad base of knowledge, then definitely go for "Trance-formations" and "The Hypnotic Language Patterns of Milton H Erickson" by Richard Bandler and John Grinder.

I am serious about my magic but price does limit things, I don't mean I won't buy a book like this because it's too expensive, I wouldn't mind paying that much for one of his books but I just don't have enough money sometimes and that's when price becomes a factor.

If memory serves me right in Tricks of the Mind he does mention he was reluctant to write the book but as TeeDee said it is written alot like Derren would write it. However I haven't read his other books, but I mean it has his kind of humour and style from what I know of him.
