Function 9 is a DVD of hard hitting close up magic that is idea for street or table hopping performers taught by one of the brightest, rising stars of the magic world today Calen Morelli, creator of Dress Code.
If you haven’t heard of Calen Morelli yet, then you’re living under a rock. This young up-coming star of the magic world has been creating some of the most organic, innovative, and hard hitting bits of magic available out there on the market today. It’s no wonder why Copperfield has hired him onto his creative team. If that alone isn’t enough to sell you on anything he puts out nothing will. Function 9 is a two DVD disk collection of 9 powerful close up, working effects that can be done anywhere, anytime, with everyday objects that your spectators are going to be very familiar with. Part of the charm of Calens magic is that it is organic. Trust me when I say there isn’t anything on this two disk set you won’t use.
I thought the DVD was very well taught, with just the right amount of pacing between tutorial, and performance to keep things from getting too preachy, or dry. The props required are simple to find, and if necessary can be bought for cheap- a fact that should attract even the starving artists of us that are out there in cyber space.
The material presented are all workers, and some effects like his Loaded, Suspended, or Friction are guaranteed to make their way into my personal walk around routines for close-up or table hopping. Everything is practical, and performable, another plus.
Lets’ talk about the effects on the DVD. You get VGH (A+B) This is basically a card sandwitch styled after Paul Harris’s grasshopper effect. The worst thing about this, is the name. Try saying the name at your next magic club meeting, and see if you’re not met with blank stares.
Pen in Bottle: This is self-explanatory. You take a pen, and penetrate a water bottle with it. Very visual, very nice.
Transport: A rubber band disappears from around your cell phone and appears around a spectators, for added effect a ring can be introduced and linked to the band. This effect is pure genius, I loved it!
Suspended: A rubber band is left hanging on another band held taught, in a blink of the eye, the taught band disappears leaving the hanging rubber band floating in midair for a brief second. Very powerful, very visual, very real. Possibly one of the closest things to real magic I’ve seen in a long time.
Loaded: A card to under box, or into hat with a surprise ending. Perfect for street or walk around!
Friction: An incredibly visual rubber band through bill penetration.
Sugar Free: A Piece of gum visually jumps from the pack into your mouth! Great for that moment in time when someone asks you if you have any gum!
Transit: A rubber band visually jumps from finger to finger on your hand. Calen offers some great new thoughts on the handling of this old effect.
Overall I’m very pleased with the quality of the magic I’ve received! This DVD set is amazing, powerful, and has a lot to offer any magician from beginner to expert. The material is practical, will be used over and over, and will be well loved. If you play your cards right, you may even wind up with a reputation maker or three. Certainly has worked for Calen. Also the DVDs are available in INSTANT DOWNLOAD format for those of you who just can’t wait for shipping.
