LolliHero by Steve Rowe is an interesting mentalism plot involving candy suckers and a reveal that will leave the audience wanting more. You have a spectator name their favorite super hero, pop a candy sucker in your mouth, and then you apparently chew that lollipop into the likeness of their named super hero. It’s certainly not your standard prediction and reveal plot for sure. But does it hold up in performance?
The trick is produced by Murphy’s Magic and comes packaged in a neat little white box. Murphy’s has really stepped up the magic trick game by constantly producing quality effects in house, and backing those effects with nice packaging. The box has a draw string on it that opens up to a compartment with two force lollipops and a standard round, everyday looking lolli. At first inspection, the plastic resin lollipops look spectacular! They look like real candy lollipops, and after they get a little spit on them, from being in your mouth, you’d never be able to tell the difference between the gimmicks and a real thing. Unfortunately, they taste horrible strait out of the box. That took a little getting used to.
The video is unnecessarily long. Weighing in at just over thirty minutes the video teaches et nauseum a rather simple plot: Have the spectator name their favorite super hero. Hope they name one of two possible outcomes, and they usually do, if not force an outcome, then reveal with a lollipop. It’s almost one of those kinds of tricks where you learn the basic handling enough to know what you’re doing, and then you chuck the rest out the window to create your own story and method. I really feel like the video was almost unnecessary. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well taught, and for an absolute new magician with no magical knowledge what so ever it’s probably a blessing, but unnecessary. More bang for your buck I suppose.
The props are very well made and will absolutely last a lifetime. Reactions with the routine provided are strong. People are really amazed that you’re able to chew a super hero’s face into a candy sucker. Surprisingly enough though, I’ve found that a disturbing number of people have asked to keep the candy afterword’s even though it’s been in my mouth the entire time. I’ve had to come up with all kinds of reasons to turn them down. I wasn’t expecting that. I thought that if anything being in my mouth would be a deterrent. But nope! They want it like some kind of keepsake.
As a closeup wonder it’s a worker’s dream. It instantly resets, is very visual, and has a pop culture tie-in that most people will connect to. I mean who DOESN’T know who batman is right? The hardest sleight in this trick is a finger palm, and the angles are nearly nonexistent. If you do a lot of kids magic then this is an absolute must have.
Overall I am very happy with this product. I’m a huge geek, and I love that kind of nerd culture. Growing up on Anime, and Batman, and super hero comic books this really hit a homerun for me. I see a lot of expansion opportunities too for this trick. Steve Rowe I’d love to see you come out with other geeky reveals. Perhaps a Tardis for Doctor Who, or maybe some popular anime characters like Sailor Moon, or Goku from Dragon Ball Z. There are some super nerdy, super iconic, and super visual reveals that you could most certainly tap into, which would only further allow for customization to individual character. You could do more with this if you wanted to. I encourage you to think about that for future expansions.
Like geeky stuff? Love comic books? Like mentalism that works in the real world? Then you’re going to love Lollihero. It’s a must have for the inner kid in all of us.
