On page 228 you get Ponsin's method for reading a deck. Basically the magician takes the deck behind the back and is able to tell what the face card is over and over again. For a mentalist it could be used as a demonstration of seeing with the fingertips. The cool part about this method is that it is still the one that is less used. The common method they mention is one of those basic tricks that everyone knows, so it makes the "new" method taught that much more powerful to laypeople and magicians.
Page 338 refers to an incredible method also by Ponsin. Basically the magician asks someone casually to think of a playing card. The participant whispers the card to someone else for security's sake. The performer then reveals the thought of playing card. This is incredibly tough but I could see someone like Peter Turner using this regularly. Ponsin apparently would repeat the effect up to 8 times and still get it right.
I don't have the time right now to find a performance of the first effect at the moment but I'll see if I can later. The second one will be harder to find. It is one that would probably only work in casual situations by expert performers.
