When I started, my parents said the same thing to me... "you'll never go anywhere with it, there's no money in it, you're wasting your time.." I just kept it as a hobby. After a few years, they grew more concerned that magic was taking up too much of my time. I don't know why; I had a great girlfriend, good grades in school, and had a well paying job and put myself through college. During college, I was asked numerous times to perform to raise funds. That took notice on the casino strip and by 2001, I was hired as a resident magician at a casino where I lived, performing 3 nights a week and getting paid $500 a night.
Needless to say, my parents changed their tune and said "You better practice!!!"
On one hand, I can understand why parents would say "magic isn't a good career"
On the other hand, why would any good parent deny their child something they enjoy doing. It's not like you're getting into trouble with it. I say more power to you! Keep the magic alive.
