From the outside looking in

I'm no cardist, in fact I only know 5 or 6 flourishes and use those for magic. Being an outsider, I look at cardistry as an awesome art form and I think that learning some flourishes would be great fun. I also have a 3 questions, the first 2 meant to be comic, and the last one not.

The first is this, with how many times you guys cut the deck it seems like 52 is divisible evenly by 53, is this true? If so, please inform me so I'll know for future reference.

Second, how many packets of cards can 10 fingers, 2 palms and a chin hold? I've see what looked like 20 different packets of cards being held by various fingers, in various positions. I didn't know that was possible.

My third question is a more serious one. Why is it that a lot of cardistry videos show the art being performed at breakneck speed? I understand that some things look better at high speed, but sometimes people need a second to take in what is being done. Also, from the little I know about cardistry, sometimes a cardist takes on the roll of a sculptor. Creating a figure or design with cards. Why not give people time to take in what they are seeing?

I am not sure what you mean by the first question so I'll skip it

2) You can hold as many packets as you want, De'vo did a display that (if I am not mistaken) was with 35 packets (give or take a few)

3)I agree on the third and so do many others, but some people prefer them faster than others, to each his own.

The first question was more of a joke relating to the number of packets you guys create in the process of doing a single flourish.

That's awesome, and of course De'vo is insanely good, I do not want to do that kind of work, though. I find the 4 or 5 cuts that I use to be enough. I am a magician try to let my magic be magical, in other words I avoid displays of extreme dexterity and speed so that no one can say "He's just good with his hands." XCM is amazing, but I think that combining it with magic gives people an explanation for the magic that reduces magic to something it shouldn't be. If anyone wants to disagree, go ahead, as long as we're civil. I'd love to see someone else's view on this.

I'm glad someone sees things the same way that I do. :) Maybe one day more people will slow down and let the cards "speak" for themselves

If your audience can't tell what you are doing, you might as well not be doing it.

I'm siding with Brad on this.

I might just be talking out of my ass on this one, but my personal guess is that the reason most card work is performed at Warp 3 is twofold. One, Brian Tudor does that and not everyone has figured out yet that Brian Tudor is the most wooden, uninteresting performer this side of Kristen Stewart. And two, most card manipulation is never actually performed.

Card manipulation is like bizarre magic in that it has vast untapped potential, and yet almost no one actually performs it outside of a few cliquish inner circles and webcams. Wasted potential is the saddest story ever told.

For #3: Not all flourishes are performed at breakneck speed...It all depends on your style. For example the virts flourishes are more fast-paced and chaotic looking. Dan and Dave go smoothly and calmly.
