He had a few effects, but wasn't anything to write home about. He made his career on being an escape artist.
I believe the nickname was for publicity by himself. He did cards, but to my knowledge wasn't "the king".
He wasn't the king of the cards. Otherwise Vernon and pretty much a ton of other card magicians at the time wouldn't have been able to fool him.
Houdini was great at two things. Escaping things (as Vernon said in an interview) and creating publicity for himself.

i have to say both of ur aguments were pretty good, the houdini banner and the point about the public...pretty good stuff...
he was a pretty good flourisher actually, he knew basic card magic and some really neat cardwork, in which he coined himself the king of cards.....some of the stuff you would see dan sperry don on his card manipulation thingy. Houdini could do that...
however, what houdini wasn't skilled with was with card sleights and varations...vernon got him with passes and triples.....an element that at the time killed a lot of skilled magicians...
we have to realize that vernon didn't come up with everthing you would see him do, this guy would travel and travel for one or two moves...something i doubt any magician would do these days...so what american magicians would see vernon do only existed in parts of the world...vernon has gotten credit for a lot of moves that he learned from other parts of the world, because he was the first mainstream person to put them all together and he was good at pyschology. he didn't just do a sleight for sleights sake, he did it with the intention as passing them off as a regular everyday motion.
to get back on subject, houdini at the time to the public was a good card worker, but comparing him to vernon was an outrage. i mean in today's world, Sankey is a good card man, but he's no dan and dave, or dave and dan, or.......you get the point....
