How to do a certain trick

I went to a magic show tonight and I was a spectator to a particular card trick I'm trying to learn. Asking the magician what the name of the trick is, he said he thinks it's the card counting trick but Google keeps giving me a different trick from the one he did.

In his trick, he had two spectators including myself. He had the other spectator cut the deck by taking one third of the deck off the top. She counted thirteen cards that she had taken from the deck. The magician then asked her to put the stack of thirteen cards in her shoe, though she actually stepped on them instead.

He ran his thumb on the rest of the cards in his hand and asked me to tell him when to stop. I did so and he stopped at the three of spades. I was asked to just say the number on the card which I did so. Then he "grabbed three cards" and dropped them. I put some of the words in quotation marks because to me it looked like he had grabbed air and the three of spades that he had earlier.

The other spectator was asked to count the cards under her feet again and she counted sixteen. (Gist is this: 13 + 3 = 16) The three extra cards came from the value of the three of spades. He then looked at all sixteen cards for the "three of spades". The quotation marks were there this time because he actually pulled out the three of clubs which I pointed out to him. He then flipped the three of clubs and on the other side appeared the three of spades.

Google has not been very much help for me so that's why I'm posting this. The magician's name is Stuart Edge who is also a stand up comedian. I tried to look for this trick I described but he never uploaded a video of it on his YouTube channel.

Please explain how Stuart Edge did this magic trick because I'd like to be able to do it myself.

Thanks in advance

You've been a member for less than 24 hours and your first post is asking how someone did a trick. For all we know you just want to know how it was done. To prove your truly into magic (and not a spectator digging for secrets, well sort of) I'd like to know what routine you'd use this in.

I'm a bit of a magician myself. I'm going to a family reunion next week and I would really like to do a magic show where I would involve this particular trick among others.

Here's the thing. It sounds like more of it being a 'cool trick' that it does being something that would fit in your repertoire as a magician. There's more than just replicating an effect to be a great magician, you need to have an original presentation, character, personality, scripting.

I'd hate to say it, but if you have a family reunion next week, and you don't know how this is done; you're not going to be able to do it.
The best you can do for your family reunion is to best practice and utilize what you have at this moment.

The forums are not for divulging secrets so you wont find any here. This is a classic of magic and is available in many books. If I were you I'd buy the book "Royal Road to Card Magic". In its pages you will learn a version of this trick as well as a whole bunch of other great tricks. If you are into magic at all you really need to understand the fundamentals in this book. That said, it is nowhere near as easy to do as Edge made it look, this will take a TON of practice just to be comfortable with what you have to do.

If you'd like to know the secrets you ask for you really need to pay your dues. You can't just expect a forum full of magicians to divulge their secrets.
