I DO NOT UNDERSTAND

My Saturday evening was spent practicing 3 flourishes.

The Sybil by 52Kards
Squeeze Cut by the Virts
Phaced by Tobias Levin

After a few hours of practice I decided to record a quick video to share my progress after 3 months time. However I failed miserably and I do not understand why.

How can I sit on my couch and feel quite confident in my progress after 3 month of practice only to put my camera phone in front of me, hit record, and fail miserably at all three flourishes?

Then I shut off my camera phone and put it away. I went back to practice all 3 flourishes again without the camera and I performed these 3 flourishes just fine at the level that I am at after 3 months.

Without the camera I do just fine, with the camera I fail miserably and feel like a complete noob all over again. Why?

It's because you're putting pressure on yourself. It's nerves because you're trying to do it for 'the real thing'.

It's the same for Magic, it's the same for open mic stand-up.

You can practice your script and routines all you want, but once you're in the fray, it's a whole 'nother skill set that you're working with, believe it or not.

Just keep practicing with the camera. Make more videos--even if they aren't that good, you're practicing with making videos. Trust me, I'm doing the same thing right now. It took me multiple takes for me romping something on Instagram lately for something I was practicing since May.

You MUST become
More comfortable making more videos. Maybe practice more like that, but start with moves you're comfortable doing and work your way from there.

Happy florishing

Thanks! I definitely need more camera time. I think I was just frustrated because I was practicing so much last night that I just had that natural expectation that I would do just fine in front of the camera. Plus it was 3am in the morning so I'm sure being tired played a factor in it as well.

On a side note. Have you ever put in some serious practice before going to bed only to wake up with your hand really sore? I just woke up and my left hand is extremely sore at the moment.

Almost all of my practice is at the end of the day. Once the kids are down for bed, it's time to break out the cards

I think when I first started, I would wake up with sore hands, but I was gorilla-gripping the bejeesus out of the decks. I'm not as intense with them now, but I'm also not doing two-handed flourishes; different arena
