And...I can't really read cursive. Is there any way to ask my spectators to not write cursive without sounding suspicious?

Ask nice. People will generally follow whatever directions they are given if they are clear and simple. Just say please print instead of please write. Preferably with someone who just successfully followed one of your previous instructions. If that still seems too risky (people drinking in noisy environments cannot be trusted to follow simple instructions!) then ask for a number.
