I only recently learned that there is such a cool thing as cardistry and after I saw what great tricks there are I took a set of cards and wanted to get started right away but unfortunately it quickly became apparent that my fingers (especially my thumb) are too short to reach around the set. is my thumb really too short? is there anyone here with the same problem or do you perhaps have a few tips for me on how best to train to avoid this shortcomming (haha)?

Nope.

It's just a matter of practicing. The more you practice the more flexible and strong your hands and fingers will become. When I started I could barely do a one handed cut, couldn't do a scissor cut at all. Now I can fully shuffle, cut/scissor cut, and Pass a deck with one hand.
