Price: 20$
Bought: Browsers den of magic in Toronto
Difficulty: Most sleights used are explained in fare detail, but you should know most of the sleights already, if your a intermidiate magician.
Review: well first of all, i know that the price is only 20$, but the material in this, i will defanitly use. Theres magic with all ordinary objects, and some card stuff, as well as a cool chop cup effect. some perfect for walk around / parlour.
I wont describe all the routines and effects, i i will describe the ones i enjoyed learning and performing.
1. Unscrewed: "You ask a spectator if you could borrow a bill from him/her. you ask them to write there name on it in big bold letters. The magiccian starts twisting the bill in to a little screw and ' RIP!" tears the bill in half. It really is torn! The magician then restores the signed bill just the same way! "
I love this effect! it is perfect for a impromtu situations. There is a gimmick, but every magician has it, i MEAN EVERY!. and once you have the gimmick, it will last you a life time, no need to replace ect. Defanitly going into my act!
10/10!
Raising sugar cane: The ideal Resturant trick! The perfromer picks up a sugar packet off the table and tears it open. He slowly pours sugar into his left fist, and then tucks the torn packet itself inside his fist for good measure. With a snap of his fingers, he opens hist fist to show the sugar packet to be completely and mysteriously restored.
Somethiong nice to do when your at a local starbucks with freinds or whatever. A nice liittle take on the classic " sugar pour". does need a setup.
8/10
Extended credit: A sweet and unique " broken and Restored" effect! using a borrowed credit card! the magician borrows a credit card and seals it in a pay envelope. The magician slowly starts bending the envelope along with the credit card inside until a big CRACK! AND SNAP! is heared and the pay envelope is ripped open to find a unharmed credit card.
I do alot of walk around, so this is not for me, there is a setup, does not take long, but after you perfrom once, you need to get another envelope and do the setup, i also dont like working with envelopes, it just covers the whole object, wich tells the spectator something sneaky is going on. i rather have the object in full view for real hard hitting close up magic. Thats just my
opinion.
The Chop suey subterfuge: As part of a chop cup routine, the magician asks a spectator to hold out her hand like a table. The magician then places the emty cup, mouth up on her hand, and asks her to place her other hand over the mouth of the cup. The magician then puts a small ball in his left hand and SLAPS! the ball up through the back of the spectators hand ( and the bottom of the cup) with the ball arriving inside the cup.
I personally do the chop cup occasionally, so i will definatly do this, so simple and effective! the best chop cup ball though cup! oyea and the spectators hand!
8/10 i dont do the chop cup normally in my routine, but will still you it occasionally.
Ring a ding: The magician removes his wedding ring and drops it into the card case. He then has a card selected and returned into the deck. A magic moment goes by and and the selected card has vanished from the pack! and has appeared in the card case neatley rolled up in the ring. ITS A MIRACLE!
I love this effect ! it is straight and simple almost no sleights. the only thing i would improve is making it a borrowed ring.
7/10 since its not a borrowed ring or signed card.
Break and Entry: This is great for resturant and bars! A borrowed quarter melts through the bottom of a salt shaker it a visual way!
i have to say, the setup is not the best, and is a bit messy, but once its done, you can reset faster, and no the coin cannot be signed, but this is a perfect for lead in for after the classic" salt shaker through table routine"
7/10 not impromtu, coin not signed, setup a bit messy, but overall a nice effect.
3 bill switch ideas: Some nice ideas on the classic bill switch meathods. definitly something to look into to. 10/10
Sugerless gum: Jay sankeys orginal " Wrap it up" explained. i know the setup is a knack, but it will always remain a classic in my book. Great for children!
9/10 setups a bit long but worth it
Those are just some effects put in this book but there are tons more. from telephone predictions, to a nice sleeves up pass described in detail and much more. I would really reccomend this book to anyone that wants some hard hitting close up magic. This is perfect for walk around/ resturant bar magician type thing. Now i know the price is only 20$ which is sad! it should cost way more for the material thats in here!
Overall: i give this book 10/10!. great book for any close up performer.
