Keeping Sponge Balls with Silver Coins?

So I have 4 silver halves and an expanded [. I have a coin purse but it's obviously meant for dollars. Keeping them in there they would rattle around way too much for comfort. I dont want to ding up my expensive shell and set. If I put two Goshman sponge balls in there with them it solves that issue but I can't seem to find out if the red sponge balls would tarnish/yellow my coins. Does anybody have the facts here? I'm not talking experience or what you think, I'm talking if there will be a chemical reaction or not, and If anyone can link me or give me an answer. Google doesn't seem to be able to. Thanks

I can't imagine any way the sponges will tarnish the coins. Coins naturally tarnish over time with exposure to air or moisture. The sponge balls don't increase the exposure to air or moisture.

Coins are easy to clean with silver polish. If you are worried about the sponge balls, just use a microfiber cloth. Also, I typically store the shell over a coin for protection and so it is ready for performance.

Agreed. Coins and brass magic items will tarnish greatly in a basement due to the air/moisture. I use Brasso to bring all of my brass items back to a "like new" finish before using them in a gig.

Won't the cellulose/polyurethane or even the red paint in the sponge balls have a chemical reaction with silver? I feel like it defeats the purpose of a lined purse you know? Thanks for the reply!

I have read and heard that as well Rick. Dampness/moisture are a no no for silver and other fine metals.

Why not just use some cotton balls instead?
"Do not store your jewelry in paper, cardboard, or cotton filled boxes as these may contain traces of sulfur which will cause tarnishing." I'd link you the article but not sure if It's alright to post links here. Thanks for the idea though.

You are worring about this way too much. I've had coins that I've cleaned with silver polish 4 years ago and they haven't tarnished. Anyway, it takes 5 minutes to use silver polish to clean the coins.

I was just using some Brasso for my Okito Box (yep, playing with that based on the Vanni Bossi book) and my Spellbinding Coins gimmick. Nice and shiny.

I understand that you are trying to care for your expensive coins but I really think you're worrying about this way too much. Those coins have been around far longer than you've had them, they'll be fine.

I'm not really worrying as much as trying to find and answer. I also had a friend who kept his silver in a knock off Onosaka purse and they turned a gross yellow overnight. Would just like a factual answer is all. Guess I'll have to see a numismatist since finding an answer is more difficult than I thought! :(

Well first off, a cotton ball can only have such a small amount of sulfur that its probably safe. Second, what if you were to find out how many cotton balls you would need, and glue them to one side of some plastic wrap. Then, put the cotton-balls into the purse so that the plastic wrap doesn't let the coins touch it. You could try that. Also, I don't think a silver coin will tarnish instantly, and you can always polish it.
