I go to a high school of nearly 4000 students, and i have just begun my senior year. Ive been a student of magic for just over two years, and have converted a friend into a fellow apprentice. This year, we decided to start a magic club during our final year of Lamar high school. We think with the large student body, as well as our knowledge of a few magicians in last years graduating class, that we will be able to get a substantial number of members. Our goal is to spark a continued interest in our fellow students, and show them the beautiful world of performance, psychology, and deception.

Naturally, many issues arise. Namely, how do we attract fellow students, and what do we do with them once they join. Any and all suggestions are not only welcome, but absolutely essential to the strength of this endeavor. So please, divulge any thoughts you have on the matter either via PM or a comment.

As to the former issue, "how do we attract fellow students," we have a few ideas. Our school has a closed circuit tv program named LCT (Lamar Cable Television), and we are working on a video showcasing some flourishes and visual changes that we are planning on advertising there. (i plan on uploading the video to the media section as soon as its done.) We also have been advertising our club and its purpose on Facebook.

The latter issue, "what do we do with them once they join," is a bit more pressing. Do we answer all their questions, share our knowledge, get them up to speed, get them practicing and just explore their performance and showmanship? or do we do the opposite, show them tricks, but explain nothing. Give them sources, websites and book names, and just let them explore on their own? As always, im sure the best course of action lies somewhere inbetween, but personally i have very little idea where. This issue more than any other is what i turn to you, Theory11 community, with the hope for help. Anyone who has had a student, or merely insights into how to teach magic, please speak up.

Although my journey into magic has just begun, It has been here for a huge portion of my life. It has changed the way i look at the world, at my community, and myself. I hope this club will not only grow and last at my high school, but also allow magic to help others in the ways it has helped me.

Well in my highschool every friday we would have almost a "news report" type of thing that showed people everything that had happened that week and ECT.., what i would do is film a short video displaying come trick's or cardistry and ask if they would play it. With teaching them that is again more pressing first off you want to make sure that they actually want to be there and it is not just some prick coming there to mess thing's up and cause trouble, but if you wish to teach start with the basic's trick's that are self working simple easy sleights like the double lift and a control, thing's of that matter.

Thank you very much for the Advice WakingHollow! The LCT program that i mentioned actually comes on every day during 2nd period, and we already have asked for a video spot for 1 min. This link https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151196529363340 Shows the the early stages of development of our video, played backwards (just for fun, we wouldnt use this for the actual segment)
As for teaching, we currently are considering teaching them a basic trick utilizing the one ahead principle with a deck of cards, as well as a self working ace routine. Sleightless, easy tricks that will allow them to develop their showmanship a little bit and help ease them into magic.

in order to spark their interest, i would do some kind of trick to show maybe in the video that will get them excited. something like thread by wayne houchin. do that to lure them in and then take it from there. as for when they get there, i would start by answering any questions they have. when i was showing my friends a few tricks, they would ask me if i knew how chris angel did one trick or another. a popular question is how he walked on water. people always ask me that and the fact that i know it sort of impresses them and they realize that i know what im talking about.

Thanks for the offer WakingHollow! PurpleMustache, My friend and i deal almost exclusively in card and coin. While i love the effect, "Thread," I dont want to give people the wrong idea on what they will be coming to learn. But you raise another interesting point, Should we answer any questions they ask?? or simply guide them to the sources??
