I go to a high school of nearly 4000 students, and i have just begun my senior year. Ive been a student of magic for just over two years, and have converted a friend into a fellow apprentice. This year, we decided to start a magic club during our final year of Lamar high school. We think with the large student body, as well as our knowledge of a few magicians in last years graduating class, that we will be able to get a substantial number of members. Our goal is to spark a continued interest in our fellow students, and show them the beautiful world of performance, psychology, and deception.
Naturally, many issues arise. Namely, how do we attract fellow students, and what do we do with them once they join. Any and all suggestions are not only welcome, but absolutely essential to the strength of this endeavor. So please, divulge any thoughts you have on the matter either via PM or a comment.
As to the former issue, "how do we attract fellow students," we have a few ideas. Our school has a closed circuit tv program named LCT (Lamar Cable Television), and we are working on a video showcasing some flourishes and visual changes that we are planning on advertising there. (i plan on uploading the video to the media section as soon as its done.) We also have been advertising our club and its purpose on Facebook.
The latter issue, "what do we do with them once they join," is a bit more pressing. Do we answer all their questions, share our knowledge, get them up to speed, get them practicing and just explore their performance and showmanship? or do we do the opposite, show them tricks, but explain nothing. Give them sources, websites and book names, and just let them explore on their own? As always, im sure the best course of action lies somewhere inbetween, but personally i have very little idea where. This issue more than any other is what i turn to you, Theory11 community, with the hope for help. Anyone who has had a student, or merely insights into how to teach magic, please speak up.
Although my journey into magic has just begun, It has been here for a huge portion of my life. It has changed the way i look at the world, at my community, and myself. I hope this club will not only grow and last at my high school, but also allow magic to help others in the ways it has helped me.
