Magic Website Tips

Hey all,

If you are interested in creating a magic website, I think I'll share some advice and tips on how to make your site look really good.

(I've posted some of these before).

- Invest. Please. Often people use co.nr to cover up a free web builder like freewebs or weebly, but the ads still show. EDIT: Thanks to IIAnnexII for his/her idea of using 1&1 or GoDaddy as a cheap web hoster.
- In most cases, you're a single person, not a business (I see a lot of sites have STAFF sections, but until your get staff... read on). Don't use words like "us" and "we", be yourself! Use "I" and "me".
- Where's the bio section!? Or a hire section!? More sections! Don't upload your site until you're completely or 99% finished! Here's a list of some necessary pages. I may have missed a couple, but overall this is what you should have at the least (not in any order):
+ Home Page (...)
+ News Page (Basically a blog)
+ Bio/About Page (Who are you?)
+ Demo Page (Pictures, videos, etc.)
+ Community/Press/Media Page (Testimonials and such.. MAYBE a forum)
+ EDIT: Links Page (Link to your friends OR sponsors.. different things; see below. This is an optional page; be wary)
+ Contact Page (Staff/Hiring/whatever...)
- Create a demo video/picture and use it for a header or footer or something.
- As well as get rid of any coming soon sections. They're completely pointless. Take that section away until you get it finished.
- Be sure to check and double check all spelling and grammar. It counts in English class, and it counts here as well.
- Don't go crazy on the "widgets". Things like stat counter, who's online, addthis.com bookmarks, etc.
- Keep it down a bit. Like the widgets, don't overflow on chat rooms, large fonts, YouTube videos, etc. Post what you need to post, and that should be good.
- Try not to have too many links, misleading or not. If you have a forum, make it embedded. If you have some videos, make sure those are in the website as well. You can have a links page, if you really need it.
- EDIT: Also, try not to list your friends as sponsors. Put them in the optional links section.
- Lastly, go with a good service provider. Lots of down time, under construction (you or them) signs, and lag aren't happy things.

I might work on this some more. Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions!

These are some great tips for the people new to web design. The tip that stands out to me the most is the use of a subdomain. If you use a subdomain, it's likely that you will get little to no hits to your website. Especially if you don't bother to promote your site. Great tips sky_lark.

EDIT: Hey sky_lark, maybe you could mention some good service providers such as 1&1 or Go Daddy.

hahaha!
I laughed at this because of what you posted on my post.
I don't agree with the freewebs and weebly thing, mostly as some of us are kids and don't have money to host a .com site.

Thanks!

hijackedmagic first post: True, but it doesn't hurt to invest.
IIAnnexII: I'll put that in. Thanks.
Magic man93: Haha, thanks for the jokes. :)
Magu Manu: To be quite honest, I have to disagree. Websites now-a-days cost about 10-15 dollars!
hijackedmagic second post: Right. I'm still having trouble finding my way around your site.. lol.

1) Yeah, but I'm only 12, and don't have much money.

2) Yeah, I got my domain for $10 at GoDaddy.

3) Yeah, I just restarted the whole site, and made it more mysterious. (I'll give you a hint: highlight) I have to finish the pages though.
