Hi All

Complete newbie here so please excuse my possibly uneducated question....

I saw a trick recently and wanted to see if i can buy it from somewhere but didnt know the name.

It involved the usual pre-trick talk/shuffles etc and essentially ends with the spectator picking either "Red" or "Black" as the magician then places cards face down into the respective pile.
the two piles are revealed and the spectator has managed to correctly guess the colour of each of the cards.

I know this is a basic description but was hoping that someone could pick up on the name of this trick.?? if so, is there somewhere i can buy/learn this?

Thanks in advance

I don't know how new you are in magic, but if this is your first trick, I have to warn you about something. Magic is a wonderful art full of amazing tricks and experiences, but the secrets behind those tricks and experiences are often not as impressive as the tricks themselves. I have been disappointed more than once in my career as a magician by a trick that seemed very clever when I saw it, but was actually incredibly simple. I have also been delighted many times by clever tricks with methods that are as brilliant as the effect they achieve. If you are looking for amazing secrets, you will find them, but not without some disappointments along the way.

Oh, one last thing. If you're not careful it magic will become an obsession, it will take over your life and either make it better or more difficult depending on your attitude towards the challenges you will face. I have taken the challenges head on and defeated almost every one I've encountered and it has made my life better.

If you decide to go find the secrets of magic, have fun, and don't bore your audiences with lackluster presentations.

That is all.

...almost. One last warning. Once you know how the tricks are done, you will always be able to see the methods, and magic will never be the same. I am rarely fooled by magic any more, especially tricks within fields that I have studied, and I sometimes wish I could forget for a moment all that I know and just be amazed by magic again. And I think that is something that every magician on these forums can echo.

I too miss being amazed. But sometimes the method itself amazes me. Its not as great a feeling as being fooled by the effect, but it's still pretty awesome.

What? The simplicity of OOTW is the best part about it, literally anyone can do it, but no one can figure it out. I'd recommend trying to find Paul Harris's version called Galaxy, I think thats the best one. Also find a presentation that lets you do the set up right in front of them, making it impromptu.

I wasn't just talking about this trick. The warning was more general. I agree with you to an extent, but I know the first time I realized how it was done I was somewhat disappointed that it wasn't more elaborate.

Most beginner magic is like that, isn't that how we all learn? I think tricks like OOTW best allow development of performance style, as that is literally all you have to think about while doing the trick. I'm afraid being dissapointed by methods is something our beginner friend is going to have to get used to. Not for every effect, but a lot of them.
