One handed fan - Genesis

Hey guys,

I understand that this topic has been discussed before. First of all I'm new here and would love to learn something from this forum.

First of all I have been doing magic for over 2-3 years for starters. Lately, I've ventured into cardistry for about 4 months. I can do a thumb fan, pressure fan perfectly fine but i have problems doing a nice one handed fan.

I've recently bought Genesis Volume 1. I understand that this requires alot of practice to master. I've put quite an amount of time to practice the one handed fan but I find my fan fundamentally wrong. Instead of being as close to a arch as shown in genesis by andrei. Mine only has a nice arch on one half of the fan.

I have tried deeper in the fingers and also tried having it placed as far out to the finger tips as possible before i fan. Both to no avail.

So guys if there is there any pointers which would steer me to the right direction. Maybe Adrei can shed some light on this matter. Below is a exaggeration of the problem I'm facing.

Well, the only thing I can really say is just practice. I know that's not what you wanted, but you will solve it in time. I'm no flourisher (just starting) so I'll let all the more experienced guys help you out. Good luck!

Anyway, you'll learn a lot on these forums, and hopefully you'll have a good time on here.

EDIT: You might want to use newer cards also. Maybe the ones your using are too old. I'd also look into the Reverse One Handed Fan. It's my favorite, and looks beautiful. (still working on mine)

Hey Oni,

I'm not 100% certain but by the distribution of the cards in the picture, it seems like these cards are far from being tuned to doing the fan you saw on Genesis. You may have a new deck, but it must be in immaculate condition in order to be flawless.

A perfectly nice round fan will only come after you master the technique itself. The mistake most people make is trying to learn fanning with a broken in or old deck. This is very frustrating and puts one in a position of doubt where the ending result is forfeit or some excuse that they aren't talented or have small hands. I strongly suggest you practice with a brand spanking new deck first, as this will ensure you understand the concept and mechanics within. You may also want to try to form the fan using just two cards, this may aid you in learning not only the practical side of things but also the conceptual work involved. As a note of caution, do not rely on using new decks for performances as an older deck will be a more likely scenario and will test your ability of fanning more so than the new one.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the new deck method, try to expand on the fan and refine your technique. Repetition will significantly improve your fans and the subtleties involved. Trust me, fanning is just something that takes hard work and commitment, don't focus too hard on it and I promise it will come with time.

Thx for the pointers. I know that the deck is not tuned for doing a perfect fan. But i think i sort of found the problem. I've been starting the fan from a grip nearer to the pinky. Hence, my spreading action is mostly done by just the thumb. I now shift my grip towards the first finger which helps the lower few fingers spread cards which makes it much rounder ; ) Don't know is that the problem but by doing so i do have a rounder fan now ; )
