Eric is a very creative guy, I give him credit for that. I bought his DVD right when it came and took a few days to watch over things carefully. I for the most part bought this because of the effect "Lace" on the DVD, I thought it would be a nice touch while mastering phases for "Linking Laces by Paul Harris" and here are my thoughts after a few days of watching this.
The description:
"Hidden in a vault, located somewhere in the creative mind of Eric Ross, lay five full phase routines that deal with everyday objects and people. Five professionally designed and tested close up magic effects. Effects Eric has kept close to him for years. What if we could somehow get Eric to release those five effects? Track him down, and beat them out of him? Then we would end up with a video that looks something like this!
P1 is only a piece the pie that is Eric Ross. Get ready. Magic has never felt so real! On this DVD you get...
Link - Eric's Crazy Shoelace illusion. Make the loop of your lace magically link to the loop of the spectator's shoelace.
Watermark - A crazy illusion using a borrowed dollar bill. Imagine changing the "watermark" in a bill, into a revelation.
Canfuse - Magically link a borrowed ring onto a borrowed soda can tab. Everything examinable.
The Band Thing - Eric's Insane Rubber band and deck routine.
The Ross Waltz - Eric's Handling of the classic "Anniversary Waltz" using two different color decks.
All effects on this DVD were created and taught in detail by Eric Ross.
Running Time: Approximately 52mins"
Quality:
Most if not all the DVD for the instructions are lower quality and filmed on a lower quality camera. I could kind of care less about the consistency of the quality. Somewhat bothersome but I just wanted to point this out that it isn't shot on a high quality film like Theory 11 videos would be shot on.
Teaching:
Eric really goes over everything you need, I mean the guy even goes over how to tie a shoe. I can't really complain, he told me everything I needed to know for each effect.
The Effects:
Canfuse: An effect released by Kevin Parker and Eric Ross a while back. I have the stuff to do this with. A very small setup and you are done. I don't know why but I've never seen this done Live anywhere on the internet, just as a webcam effect. I'm going to be doing this hell yeah
The Band Thing: This is an effect where you show a prediction wrapped around with a rubberband and you have a spectator select a card and lost it in the pack and you show the prediction card and have them name their card the next time you show the prediction card...it's actually their selected card.
Nice concept, It's kind of a "Not for me" effect, it might be something I will perform but not that often. The smallest bit of setup and you are done. I might give it a try.
Lace: You get to see a performance of Eric doing this effect to a man in a ...dress lol. I could tell that Eric got the idea for the end of the effect later on. He had a bit of trouble at the end because I can tell making them unlink would be a bit hard to do but something I can makeup for myself.
Your loop from your lace melts through their lace loop. Lace is something I will use, there is a tiny tiny bit of setup you need to make and that can be done in literally a minute and you won't need to do anything else after that. It's easy and quick, I'll be using this! Oh and did I mention I love shoe effects. I'm the kind of guy that does Laced by Dan Hauss.
Mark: An effect based on Dan Sperry's "Made in China". You get to see this done on Shane Black. An interesting card revelation on a borrowed bill. You borrow their phone to backlight the bill to show the card revelation watermarked on their bill
Again, very nice easily done. Something I will use in the right situation.
The Ross Waltz: I didn't like this. Watching the performance to the camera you can kind of tell Eric Ross isn't the greatest at handling cards. Good idea though, but Not something I would perform to real people. It's an idea to work with though.
Overall: I enjoyed the DVD, I do wish that we could see the performances that are pointed to in the demo. For most of the effects all you get to see are performed just for the camera
I enjoy watching effects done live to real audiences like RSVP MAGIC DVD's or Gregory Wilson DVD's. Anyway, learned a few things I will start doing once I master them.
