Pinky

Hey guys, need some help... Cuts like the OHR and more complex flourishes like dan and daves eko require the pinky at the bottom short side of the packet, for stability. I have made the mistake of learning the cuts with the pinky at the long right hand side, kind of a mechanics grip. Should I try and relearn all of the flourishes that use this grip? is it a bit of a bad habit, because it seems the reason for packets slipping out is the lack of the pinky bein at the bottom, but it seems very unnatural to me.

Hi,

time to readjust your grip. its physically impossible for you to not be able to grip it in Mechanics grip unless you have the smallest hands in the world. (which, assuming you dont.) all you need to do is readjust your grip. if its in the middle of the cut, find a way to re-adjust in the middle of it.. for instance in a sequence i do, I can only do a carnahan fan if i push the deck downwards and flush my index finger with the topmost part of the deck (unlike what is taught in the DVD, which is straight from mechanics grip)

the result is a 0.5 delay in which i can do a carnahan.. but it looks perfect. again, its not about re-learning the move or learning bad habits, its about re-adjusting. you should NEVER, ever switch fingers because you think you cant do it.

Edit: If you're wondering, my hands are only slightly bigger than Lee Asher's.

Well, besides the fact that Lee Asher's hands are actually larger than that picture, he was actually saying that he couldn't hold it in a straddle-esque grip.

You should only use that grip on whatever feels comfortable. If you think that you can improve with it, go for it! You should not need to relearn EVERYTHING from the ground up so you can always try!

Good luck!

Now that you say that- My fingers are only a phalange bigger than those in the photo. so you can imagine how small they are.

Try not to develop bad habits, specially when trying to learn certain moves, specially those from Dan and Dave. sometimes you really have to just push on with the grip that they teach until it feels normal.

for instance, i used to compensate for my small fingers by using my index finger to strip the first flare in Pandora. it took me a year to realise that it looks slower and more.. Rigid when i used my index, so i reverted back to stripping it with my middle and ring finger.
