Hello,

I am new to this site and forum and i found some cool tricks and i have purchased some of them already and i came across the trick called "Break". All i wanted to know is that if this trick is performed using gimmicked coins or real / regular coins. So lets say, i ask you for a coin and i break it right there in front of you or do i have to swap it out for a fake one.

The reason i ask this is because if you buy the trick it says that some coins gets shipped to your home and since i live in belgium this is kind of an expensive way to go about it and there for not really worth spending 50 dollars on a trick i can't even perform. Thanks in advance.

Also, if the coin is performed using real coins. Can it be done with like 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 EURO cents and higher or no?

Sorry if there already exists a post about this or if i posted this in a wrong section of the forum. As i said, i am new here and its my first post so. Forgive me in advance.

Trick works by using high quality gimmicked American Pennies.

Well, you could utilize a routine about traveling.

Nothing is out of the question. Just have to put a bit more elbow grease into it
Well yes but. If I pull out a coin and tell em I'm going to break it in 2. People could think a bunch of things and it is just less impressive I think

I don't have Break, yet, but a way I thought of to explain using a foreign currency is to say something along the lines of

"I've been robbed, seriously. I went shopping, paid for the stuff and the checkout girl gave me this." - show the penny - "It's a US penny. What do I want with a US penny? It's useless, I can't spend it."

I'm not saying that is what I would go with word for word, but something along those lines would explain A) Why you have a foreign coin, and B) Why you would be willing to break it.

Mmm. Yes why not. A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician. I just need a solid story. I was thinking like.you walk around and find people you want to show your trick to. Start talking to people and tell em something like. You see that man over there? (point at a random.) that's an American and he asked me if I could give him some change because he ran out of euros and in exchange he gave me some us pennys in return. Now there is nothing I can do with it here in * insert country name*.but I know a trick that can only be done using a penny of the way it is made. Then just Break it in 2 and then like play it off. Maybe even compare it to like a 5 euro cent coin because it looks a bit like it and let them try. I don't know yet

Why announce that you're going to break it in half?
Well you shouldn't indeed but.I could just walk up to you show you a coin and break it in 2.people won't be impressed because they don't know what it is that I break in 2. So it could literally be anything. And therefor be extremely suspicious and fake

Well you shouldn't just walk up to people breaking coins like a mad man. Like in any magic routine you need patter. That's what I intended to point out.

Just another thought on how to play off using a foreign currency.

Be prepared to perform maybe a few different coin routines, 1 of which would be Break. You then have at least 4 or 5 coins, make sure there is some variety, and make sure that a Break coin is one of them. Just make sure that you have something to you are comfortable to perform with each coin. For me I might go for a few 10p coins, a £1 coin, a Break coin and a couple of 2p coins.

Casually hold the coins and give a spectator a free choice of any coin. If they don't pick the Break coin then you just go into the routine that you have prepared which uses their chosen coin and you save Break for another time. If they pick the Break coin then you're golden.

They may ask what coin it is because they're not familiar with it, whether they do or not just play it off with the whole "oh a machine gave me that as change, apparently it is a US penny or something like that." Job done, they chose the coin, you've explained why you have this weird coin and now you're good to go on with your presentation of Break, something that as far as they know could have been done with any of the coins (unless you play it up in your patter that the foreign currency is useless to you). Boom. Done. :p

One last idea for this, I promise, maybe...

Show the spectator a coin, any coin you want but a silver coin would work better for contrast. Ask them to place their hand out flat and as you place the coin in their hand switch it for a Break coin, then whilst you have the coin covered tell them to make a tight fist and to keep holding tight to make sure you can't get to it. The spectator now thinks they have the original coin in their closed fist but they actually have the Break coin.

Now it is all in the presentation. You could go for something along the lines of snapping your fingers then asking if they felt something. They didn't so the answer should be no, but often you'll get a yes, it doesn't matter. Now some patter about how you stopped time, took the coin from their hand and switched it with another. They open their hands and they're holding a different coin. Now you say something along the lines of you are going to be going travelling soon so wanted to change some money but because the Euro is so weak against the dollar right now (I don't know if it is and neither will they) the coin was only worth a US penny.

They've now seen one miracle with this coin and you're ready to show them another, free of any questions for why you are using foreign currency. Double BOOM. Double done. :p

As I said before, I don't own Break (yet) but I think the effect is so strong that it is worth a little mental and creative effort to overcome any perceived hurdles.

Hope you find something in this thread that works for you.
