This is for everyone on here that love doing flourishes. I want to add more flourishes in my card magic. I have been watching you guys for a while now and I have a couple of simple questions for you.

1. Do all of you use fanning powder on your cards? Is that a MUST for most of the flourishes I have seen on here?

2. How long does it take for you on average, to pick up all the moves when you want to do a new flourish? I ask because I have owned the Trilogy for a while and I still can only complete like one or two flourishes on there.

3. What is the key to making your flourishes look so flashy? Is it speed? I think my sybil still looks a little slow and not as flashy as a lot of you.

Just curious, because I think I am a little older than a lot of you on here and when I watch some of your videos your posting I wonder how in the hell are these kids doing these flourishes already and the dag on video just came out a week ago....lol.

1) Not everyone uses it, its only if you prefer it. If you use fanning powder, then your cards may become more difficult to use for magic.

2) It really depends on your natural ability and how much work you put into flourishes. Some people can pick it up within a day, while others might take up to a few months even years.

3)I think being a combination of smooth and fast makes your flourishes look flashy. Contrary to alot of hardcore flourishers say, laymen enjoys flourishes that looks eyecatching, rather than the difficulty of the move being performed.

good question

1. nope never used fanning powder.

2. depends on the flourish getting an understanding and being able to pull it off comes quick but perfecting a move well and smooth almost every time that takes a lot of time and dedication to a move. from experience pick a flourish you really enjoy and stick it out until you impress yourself with how well you can you perform it before moving on.

3. be smooth and consistent. even a laymen will notice when your choppy and unsure of what your doing. if youve been into card magic for awhile you already know the importance of being smooth and deliberate with your moves.

1. I've never used it, I generally just open new decks :p

2. Depends on the flourish, at first it takes ages, but you pick them up faster as time goes on because most just build apon other flourishes, same swivel here, or roation there etc, the hardest ones are ones that have a totally new concept or pivot point or something that takes a while to get used to. I generally try and make up my own flourishes lately because learning from tutorials annoys me, I spend half my time trying to work out what they are doing, once I finally get my head around the camera angles or the fact they are left handed, or the fact they mirroed the footage in an attempt to "help" me, I just can't be bothered anymore :p

3. Really is just getting smooth, not hesitating, then when you get good you can put your own sort of style and flare into it, it's really up to you.

You little stalker!
1. I love it. Use it on all my decks. it makes them last so much longer. I did a test where i flourished with a unpowdered bicycle deck and then a powdered one. The unpowdered one lasted 2 days. I've been flourishing with the powdered one for a week and a half and it still flourishes like new. So to answer your question, no its not necessary but it does help a lot .

2. Depends on the flourish. But according to Andrei, once you been doing it for a couple years, everything will be easy to learn, even if its a new concept.

3. The key to smoothness is synchronization. Which means every bit of the flourish should be at the same speed. For example, if one part of the flourish (like a revolution cut) is slow but the rest of it is fast, then slow down the rest of the flourish so they are in sync with the revolution cut.

1. No. Fanning powder helps make you have better fans. It makes them spread better but still have the deck stiff enough to do cuts. Like a broken in deck that can fan like new but is not slippery. It's not necessary since you can still make nice fans without powder but fanning power does help you make better fans if your a bit obsessed with fans.

2. It all depends on how long you practice and how dedicated you are to learning. The first few months are hard for everyone but usually at around your 6th and 7th month of hard practice you get used to some moves. But just remember that some moves out there you will find are just impossible to do. You practice everyday on the flourish and you still can't do it. I would suggest just skip the flourish and learn something else. Than in a few weeks try that flourish again and for some reason it will fell alot easier to you.

3. The key to making your flourishes look flashy is both speed and smoothness. With alot of practice your fingers will get used to soe flourishes and you will find that you can do them fast and not a single card will drop or move. Some flashy moves involve flare which is just the way you move your hands.

1. It depends on how serious you are about flourishing. When you get deeper into XCM, you'll find some fans are impossible to accomplish without fanning powder. Such as Jerry's one handed 180 fans. Giant fans as well usually require fanning powder to look good. Fanning powder also helps cards hold together more. It all comes down to preference in the end. I choose to powder some decks, and not powder some other decks.

2. The more experience you get, the easier you will be able to pick up flourishes. I originally couldn't get anything on the trilogy except for eko. However, the more time I put into practicing, and the more flourishes I came across, the easier I found it to pick up flourishes. You'll become familiar with many different basic flourishing moves. Once you learn those, you'll find that the majority of flourishes are based around them. Flourishes will then become easier to learn, however that doesn't mean that you will be able to perfect them faster.

3. For flashy (I assume we're talking about two handed cuts and not fans and armspreads, I don't care what anyone else says, it needs to be fast. I hear all the time that you need to be smooth. But that's just an excuse for people who cannot execute moves fast. After you learn to execute the whole flourish fast, without making it look choppy by taking a lot of pauses, then your flourish will look amazing. There are probably people who disagree with me, but that's my opinion.

my world of magic
This is for everyone on here that love doing flourishes. I want to add more flourishes in my card magic. I have been watching you guys for a while now and I have a couple of simple questions for you.

1. Do all of you use fanning powder on your cards? Is that a MUST for most of the flourishes I have seen on here?
nope, sometime a slick cards helps for flourish
daryl's hot shot for example, if you use fan pow, it'll get harder to flick the card

i'm not a full timer flourishian either, but i love to flourish while break time between my tricks...

i use fan powder only for cards that has bad finish, and those are :
aladdin 1001 smooth finish
bee <-- if i want to use them for manipulation, i never use these for magic
some custom bicycle such as : tragic royalty, vintage 1800 series, faded, etc
texan
and many more, you get the point

2. How long does it take for you on average, to pick up all the moves when you want to do a new flourish? I ask because I have owned the Trilogy for a while and I still can only complete like one or two flourishes on there.
entirely new moves that includes special grip : 3-7 days
example : molecule, pandora

new moves : 1-3 days

combo cut : 1 day

3. What is the key to making your flourishes look so flashy? Is it speed? I think my sybil still looks a little slow and not as flashy as a lot of you.
it depends your style
the speed will come to you in time, while practice aim the smoothness, not the speed.
remember, flourish is for entertain people

Just curious, because I think I am a little older than a lot of you on here and when I watch some of your videos your posting I wonder how in the hell are these kids doing these flourishes already and the dag on video just came out a week ago....lol.

No only girls, crackers and babies use powder

Is that a MUST for most of the flourishes I have seen on here?

No you don't need it at all unless you want to be doing fans all the time.

2. How long does it take for you on average, to pick up all the moves when you want to do a new flourish?

It takes me an hour to learn the moves and weeks to get it up to speed.
Oh and you should have started with showOff vol1 instead of the trilogy.

3. What is the key to making your flourishes look so flashy? Is it speed? I think my sybil still looks a little slow and not as flashy as a lot of you.

Its all about the speed.

It has nothing to do with age,Like I said If you know the mecanics for the basic flourishes then the rest is easy. All of these flourishes are from Brian Tudor's ShowOff.
