Rope magic

Hi, I have some questions regarding rope for rope magic. First off, I was wondering how do you whiten your rope without affecting it's condition too much? Also, how would you recommend to stop the rope from splitting at the ends? Just a few more questions. Where would you recommend buying your rope from? Which brand do you prefer? And lastly, what sources would you recommend for either the questions above or for learning advanced rope magic? As of now I have Fiber Optics by Richard Sanders. What rope trick/routine do you like to perform? Sorry for this being just a big long list of questions, but I am very interesting in getting a solid rope routine into my act, and I had a lot of questions regarding the topic. Thank you in advance.

I use the standard magician rope you find in magic shops. It's cheep enough that when it starts to get dirty i toss it. To keep the ends together I use a touch of rubber cement. Now, if you use the rope from the hardware store like is used in Rope Nut Knot, you can use a lighter to melt the ends. Again it is cheap enough I just toss it when it gets too dirty. The other way to go is use a colored rope like red or blue. Those last a bit longer.

I would pick up Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks for Magicians. You can get it new for less than $11 or used for less than a dollar.

Has anyone tried "tucking the ends back into the rope"? I do not know how to do this or exactly what it is. Is it worth looking into, or should I just use rubber cement, as krab has said?

the cool thing with the cement is it makes the ends of the rope stick so you can put the ends together for storage

I actually don't care which brands my ropes are as long as they are 100% cotton.

To prevent the rope from splitting, I usually take about 20 inches of thread and wrap it around the ends of the rope. This will probably take some time, but it's totally worth it...

For the ends (on magician's rope) simple tape is all you need and it's what's been used most for years. I usually use medical tape in that it's white.

The cotton rope we usually work with can be washed by hand in the sink with a bit of bleach and a gentle cleaner such as Woolite or even baby Shampoo but make certain that you rinse it well and then ring it out well before handing it to dry. . . not in direct sun light however in that this will usually stiffen the rope. . . outside in a shaded area or on a cookie sheet in your over at abut 90 degrees (f) until it feels mostly dry but not totally dry. . . set the timer on the oven so you don't make a long, fowl smelling bit of cotton char.
