Rules of Magic?

I've heard a lot of people tell people "you should do this....", ".....should be performed in this way.....", etc. and personally I do not really agree with people saying things like this.

Yes, I agree that it is great for more experienced magicians to give advice, however, I believe it is 'great' to a certain extent. I am not talking about the real artists who write their own books, i.e. Darwin Ortiz, Aaron Fisher, etc. but those who (like on this website) try and say something that others do, is wrong.

I believe that one of the reasons the art of magic is deteriorating is because of this- people trying to tell others how to perform, what is wrong with what they're doing, etc. People should experiment with things by themselves, and do magic the way they feel comfortable doing it.

If they still garner the reactions they want, it really doesn't matter if it i 'astonishment' or 'entertainment' or a 'trick'.

I'l probably be bashed by many around here. But I'm doing it my way :D

What? I mean telling a magician to do so and so while performing is like telling a painter he can't paint so and so. Art is expressing yourself through what you do. Not going by a set amount of rules.

You have 1 goal. It's to entertain people. As long as people get entertained by what you are doing. You are doing it right.

What rules?

I think NlightN said it best - it would be like telling a painter how to paint. It's art; it's self expression. As long as your audience is being entertained, who needs rules?

I do, however, disagree with the original poster's opinion that magic is deteriorating. It's changing.

Dude you won't get bashed because probably the whole website will agree with you, they just don't know that they are doing it, (not pointing, or saying that I don't do that, because I probably do)

Totally agree, that means I should watch my advice, this should be more of a warning not to the people who give advice, but to the people who listen to it- DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR

Let me say first off I am not bashing you. But I was reading this thread and I agree with what your saying but who is telling who how to perform the only thing I see is people with real experience giving real advice from their mistakes. If someone doesn't desire the knowledge of experienced performers and they wish to pursue with only their own exploration then why be in talks on a forum. I don't know. I don't see much of a difference from someone thats wrote a book and it being OK to give advice versus another member thats working in the field as well. I see alot of roads being closed off to you setting those kind of barriers up. In my opinion you may get alot of that elsewhere but in defense of our community I think we have some brilliant magicians that are worthy of taking advice from. Maybe I am just misunderstanding your post?

You have made and excellent point. I perform 2-3 times a week so have reasonable experience. I'm happy to offer advice but i have to say that if your audience are happy and astounded then you are doing something right.

I will also say that there are good ways of doing things and better than good. You may well get a good reaction but you might find after applying a "rule" that a routine unexpectidly improves and getts better reactons. Reactions aside you might also find that people remember your routines more as well as the reactions.

Good post!
