Speech : Exposure, Is it Right?

UPDATE Speech : Exposure, Is it Right?

Ok Guys and Gals, Basically for an English assessment we have to do a speech to the class and persuade them that our view is right. Being the only magician in the school I decided to do a speech on exposure.

I had an idea where I would perform/show video of an Ultra-Amazing trick, which would stun everyone, then I would show a video of me doing a tutorial for it (Obviously the tutorial would be like the ones on http://www.mallusionist.com/ Something silly like that) Then I would go on to my main speech. And talk about how bad exposure is.

Ok Main point of the thread what I want to know is what is the deal with Intellectual Property and methods of magic. Surely the videos on (Bad Site Here) and the posters could face some sort of charge or something, I dont know. Isn't there a fine or penalty for these people? Yeah. I hope you understand, its late here, I'm shattered and I have to finish a big essay due in tomorrow (Yay, last minute homework)

Cheers, Tom

Remember in the books or teaching DVDs:
"Don't pay attention to this move/gimmick/sleight. Because if you don't pay attention to it, the spectator won't."

Maybe its because I'm from germany, but I don't have much problems with exposure here.
I hope you don't break more than you are trying to fix man.

Its nothing big, just a speech in front of the class, there not into magic, as I said, Im the only magician in the school. There not going to turn into a bunch of exposers. All I have to do is do a 4 min speech on an arguement and presuade the audience that my view is right.

My topic. Exposure. My Arguement. Its bad, something should be done.

Cheers, Tom

Correct me if im wrong, i do think that you will make a great speech because of the problem that we face. But dont you think that you are encuraging the facs that exposure really exists? I dont think that you should do a tutorial and show your class how you did it. ( thats exposure, is it not ?)

I do think that you should do this presentation but put it in another angel?

And as fot the problem to getting them to care.... try to make some sort of parallel to something else that maybe in the intressst to them?

Im not, I wouldn't dare do that, have a look at the tutorials on the link at the top, I'm going to do something like that. I was going to talk about stuff like. "How would you feel if you got ripped off like that..." etc.
Ive got loads of ideas swimming around in my head, I'm really kick bottom at speeches. We had 5 mins to think up a speech about Why You Didnt Hand In Your Homework. And I completely "wow-ed" the class, now they all think I should go into politics.

I think Ive had a change of plan for the opener, Im not going to show that trick and a (FAKE) tutorial for it. I think Ive thought of something else.

Cheers, Tom

please don't forget to mention how Penn and Teller are still the kick ass magicians and command respect because of the exposure they do....

what is exposure ???
does it mean explaining the workings of a trick .... well most books on magic do that and all magic dvds do that ....

so what kind of evil is it that we are talking about.... it must be the explaining of magic tricks at youtube and other related sites.... now why is that bad ?? could it be because its for free....

so is the FREE exposure of magic tricks bad....??

also remember that the audience is not that DUMB....

check out the following clip..

so even bad performances can be exposures of sort....

Hm... I really wouldn't say this is an example for a bad performance. So I don't get your point right here. I actually enjoyed this kind of lighthearted, comedy-ish performance, even though I knew how it was done.
Heck everybody knows how to let a pencil levitate while gripping your wrist with one hand. Its still nice to see it if someone does a good acting.

precisely my point sir.... the fact is that sometimes the beginners in magic take the secrecy part of magic too seriously and get all bothered and worked up at exposure of magic secrets... though i am not a professional performer but i have performed for ppl enough to figure out that the audience is not stupid, they DO understand that magic is really about clever principles at work but they enjoy the drama and the showmanship and presentation.... my advice to the young guys in magic is not to be worried about being figured out by audience so much and focus more on the fun part and enjoyment of it all...
