The Big Transfer...

Hey everyone, and thank you very much for even reading this. First, I will tell you of my situation at hand, and then continue on with the problem that I have. So, I have been into magic for about 2 years now, and cardistry for about a year and a half. I personally love both. But the thing that I'm noticing is that I am beginning to only do cardisty instead of magic. I was unaware of this until one of my cousins said, "hey, show me a trick". From there, I was sort of at a loss. Then I did just the standard lift, not your card, and then had them touch it to then be there card. It got a great reaction, but I just don't have the spark for it anymore. But the weird thing is that, I absolutly love cardistry, and just how beautiful, awesome, and flashy that it is. And me being a quiet kid, I find it to be a great way to show people that I can be outgoing and different also. OK, now that we are through that, my final worries are two more things. One, how do I confront the question of seeing a trick, when I only wish to pursue cardsitry. Secondly, my dad is taking me to a magic shop up in Toronto ( I sadly have no place of refuge where I currently live to meet others with similar passions as me. So, what I am asking is, do magicians and magic shops accept cardists, or do they just look at them sot of as "useless card twirlers" (I am not offending cardists here, just so you are aware). Again, thank you. And any support or advice is greatly appreciated. Have a nice day/night.

A lot of old hats look at us as 'card twirlers' and think that because we are card twirling, we think we're doing magic.

And we know we aren't. Both are two completely different skill sets.

I'm into both magic and cardistry and also have no way of meeting with other cardists and magicians aside from the forums.

You're going to a magic shop, enjoy it! It is possible to incorporate some functional flourishes into actual magic and make it look spectacular.

As far as being confronted with performing something. There are some magic moves that actually do get used I cardistry. Popular one is color changes. Maybe when you go, ask about color changes.

Just a suggestion. And I hope this helps in some capacity

Thank you very much for the response, I greatly appreciate it! One thing that I am curious to is your advice and suggestion of color changes. I know this is a stupid question but aren't color changes for magic purposes only. Or do they sort of act as an off-guard woah, or shock to the spectator watching you flourish? I am just curious, and thanks for your advice again. And if you do respond, could you offer just a few examples of some awesome color changes also? Again, thanks!

No problem!

Color changes are just easy to pull off and are seen as something to spice up a flourish routine, as far as that goes. There's a few other magic applications that are spliced into cardistry

Honestly, I don't know of what are the best color changes to use for flourishing as there are hundreds of different 'changes. I don't use any. And I'm still learning how to do Mechanics Pass. Eventually, I'll be moving over in the direction of Clipshift.

Sorry to keep thanking you, but it is awesome how active and helpful you are on these forums! Also, I kind of think that I might have an example of incorporating color changes into cardistry. In Eliot Slevin's video, Run Rabbit, the duck change along with various card twirls seemed to flow extremely well. Also, I have one last question. Do magic shops kind of disregard cardists because of them being at a "magic" shop when they don't deal with anything magical? Again, thank you.

It's all good, i try to add constructive feedback in a quick manner. Because, sometimes, you want answers NOW.

Let's get to it, shall we?

I am aware that a lot of magic shops aren't exactly privy to cardistry being its own entity now. I think they see it as something that is riding on the coat tails of magic. Honestly, I would ask and see if there are books that explain and go into card changes. At least that way, you have a magic book.

Not that you should 'hide' that what you want to do is cardistry, but they either won't really get what you're doing or look down on it, in my opinion.

But if you're looking for specific card changes, if window shop online and not rush your selection.

I hope this helps in some capacity

I seriously like that idea! It would be a good topic to discuss with them, and even a way to improve my card handling within general. Thanks for all the great tips and advice you have offered here, see you around!
