Trick Creation

Hey guys. I'm starting to get interested in creating my own tricks. I don't know if it says anything about Trick Creation anywhere on T11, so I made this topic. If there is another thread about this, please let me know.

Any way, where do those of you who have created tricks get your inspiration from? Also, if you have any advice or anything about Trick Creation, that would be cool too.
I've tried to make some tricks... but it hasn't been working too well. So, any tips/pointers would help.

Thanks
:)

I would say try to break away from a deck of cards. I've been thinking of how to do tricks with CD's for the past week.

If you TRY to create a trick, it wont happen. You might come up with something but it will not be very good. No one sits down and says "Ok, now I'm gonna create a trick". What happened to me, with creating some tricks, is I watch a lot of performances of magic. Sometimes I see something cool and I get an idea of how that can be used. Then I work on that Idea and it expands and thats how a new trick is born.

So just watch magic. Observe people and learn as much as you can, and somewhere along the way you will get the greatest idea.

I think I read a topic like this somewhere, but I could be wrong.

I just get my inspiration from bascially anywhere and everywhere. I could dream about me doing a ground-breaking effect, wake up and immediately start working on it. In fact, just yesterday, I was practicing the Invisible Palm routine, and I got an idea for a variation, so now i'm practicing my variation, and performed it for the first time today. It wasn't bad actually. You can get inspiration anywhere. It could be from a spectator, from a movie, TV, a book....anywhere.

Sounds cool. I've seen CD tricks before, but I haven't done them. It will probably be cool to see if I can come up with a trick using something other than cards.

If you are just starting to make you own stuff I would say start with the area that you know the most, cards, coins, sponge balls etc. Because that way you have a lot more options available to you in terms of slights, cleanups and so on.

Ok. I'll keep that stuff in mind too. Apparently some people carry around notebooks in case they come across an idea for an effect. I think I will start doing that now. Also, the advice you guys gave on how to find inspiration is interesting too. I'll keep my eyes open for anything, thanks.:D

Carrying a notebook is a good idea. That's what I do, and I have about 20 little effects written down that I created. Simple stuff, but it works.

The notebook thing is great. I just basically play with things., I get told I touch things too much. Jsut mess with things till a method appears, then figure out what can be done with the method. Other thing is learn other tricks. Learn that you dont have to do the effect. They just have to think you did, and remember you did. Buy Creating MAgic (or sumthing) By Jay Sankey, Excellent tips on there.

Ideas will come at the most random of times, trust me.

I created an effect during my Socials class simply by accident. I was fooling around with a coin and came up with an idea, using a coin and paper.

No one comes up with an idea just by saying they want to, I have an idea with a card reveal on pavement I'm coming up with but, I can't work out the kinks....So, if you do come up with something, keep working at it. The more effort you put into an effect once you have an idea the better the outcome will be.
