What do you guys think?

A friend of mine (from school) recently told me of a trick he'd came up with - like Bound, except with an elastic band around the deck. Anyway, I figured out the method within seconds of him describing it to me online - it's quite simple.

So that was about a week ago. Today he tells me he got this e-mail from www.magicmagic.co.uk - (see attatchment).

It kinda annoyed me because he hadn't even ever performed it - let alone refined it, etc. However, I'm fairly pleased for him. I just wish he'd taken more time over it.

What do you think?

I agree, I think he should have tested it and refined it more before he submitted it, if that is the case. But congrats to him.

I love how the name seems to be one of the main importances.

I think he should of at least performed it for a couple of months or something so he at least knows his own trick.

I've been through this exact same situation, and I learned my lesson. Hopefully he won't end up dropping as much money as I did into the project. On another note, I'm not to sure about posting private e-mails on forums like this...

You were able to figure out the method within seconds and without a proper demonstration? If you're sure you git it right then it must mean it's very simple indeed.

I'm wondering at why the company quickly considered marketing his product even though as you said, it was in its early stages. Maybe not in its early stages anymore because it could have developed rapidly and efficiently but an effect that hasn't been tested and refined is bound (no pun intended) to have some flaws.

Maybe he should hold it for now, continue to improve it, and test it in actual situations. If it does get produced and it turns out to be a killer effect, then good job on his part and congratulations. :D

I think...I am not surprised in the least. The way the market works these days...this is pretty much the norm and actually refining and putting any amount of effort into a release is the exception.

Well, although it's easier to get yours on the market, that's sad for those who want real quality in their effects.

The truly sad part is that people will buy something like this without scrutinizing it. The company that is going to snatch up this effect, produce it, and sell it understands that while it might not sell to a ton of people it is an easy way to make a few quick bucks and pay for the monthly site charges until they can get their hands on the next half-baked idea someone tosses their way.

Yeah, when he described it to me, a certain method came to mind - and I asked him if it was correct. Unfortunately it was. (I say unfortunately because I think it's a horrible method - another, well-known trick uses the exact same method, but I won't name it for obvious reasons.)

but if another well known trick uses that method, then how can he release it?

it'll be like the jay sankey-daniel madison thing?

Not quite - it utilises the same sleights as another trick, just applied slightly differently. But it's a basic sleight that isn't exclusive to one trick. It's hard to explain without revealing.

Example of how a double lift can be used in a variety of effects. Same principle, different effects.

I also do think, though, that him coming up with an idea and suddenly selling it without much performance is a poor idea. But, to each their own.

EDIT:

Just noticed The Emogician asnwered this :p

First of all, I don't think your friend will appreciate his name being publicly posted on the internet for all to see (along with his email) without his permission. I went through the same situation and learned from my mistakes. Hopefully he will learn from his as well.

i would be stoked dude, he just has to be carefull so he doesn't get cheated out of the effect.

he should hold off on it, refine it and make sure he is a good negotiator or they will trick him and then he will be PO'D.
