This is a trick that I remember from almost 30 years ago. You show a long thin envelope with diamonds printed on it. You pull a slip of paper out of it showing that there is 4 numbers on it, (or 4 ESP symbols, or icons, etc), You have someone cut through one of the diamonds Opening the envelope the cut pieces fall out showing which items was cut through matching the prediction written on the back of the envelope.

If it's what I'm thinking, the method is quite old. I read it in a kids magic book from the library ages ago. A similar idea to the newspaper strip prediction. There is one printed idea in Karl Fulves book Self-Working Mental Magic (1979). He calls it the Want Ad Test. (p. 53)
