I wash my hands before practicing with a clean, usable deck whenever possible. However, I almost never get that opportunity while performing. I started using hand sanitizers and a tissue to clean my hands prior to performing, to keep the cards clean and usable. I feel like its been working, but I am not sure. Does anyone know?

Hand sanitizer is not a cleanser. What's happening is it's killing germs on the surface of your skin. It does nothing to remove dirt, and really, it doesn't even remove those germs. It just kills them.

If your hands are already basically clean, though, what it does do is dry out the oils on your skin. So what you may be experiencing is that the oils that were on your hands are no longer there, so they aren't getting onto the deck and gumming them up.

Also what Brett said - sanitizer can get sticky.

Make sure the sanitizer you use is hypo allergenic.
There are people..like myself..that are allergic to some chemicals in it. This can and will transfer to the cards and spectators.

There are two thoughts on this. Some magicians will use hand sanitizer to actually help "dry" their hands out if they tend to get the sweaty perspiration thing going. They alcohol helps dry your palms out some; however for some users they do then get that "gummy" feel to them which isn't good.
