I Need All The Help I Can Get

Well, all i'm saying is that most magician here are working on the "impossible impromptu miracle" (like a new ACAAN or any thought card in weird locations), and although it's fun and creative process, i strongly believe that the same or even better reactions are achieved by performing a simple biddle trick.
Just my two cents: those are tricks made for magicians
I agree with you completely on that. To a laymen it doesn't matter what method you use for this sort of effect, they are just looking to be entertained. And as long as you entertain them, then you are succeeding in my opinion.

The whole point I was trying to make with this thread is to see if there is some secret underground ACAAN that is this "impromptu impossible miracle". The magic club that I belong to is big in creating effects and our president is wonderful at creating mentalism effects so his approach is to create this effect using the best mentalism he knows. He is heavily inspired by Derren Brown's version of the effect. I personally am not as well versed in mentalism but can engineer gimmicks that I need fairly easily so my approach is to brute force engineer the effect.

Is the exact effect that I described truly impossible? Who knows. But since the challenge is there I think there will always be people like the magic club and myself that try to find it. It's sort of like our version of the Money Pit. Is there even a treasure or anything worth finding down there? Who knows but the fact is the challenge is there so people are going to attempt it.

Part of my issue is I have really been studying up Dai Vernon lately and I'm really inspired by his story. I disagree with his policies as a family man but I am fascinated by how dedicated he was to being the master of anything to do with cards. I was at a magic shop just recently and we were talking about Vernon and how he left his family to hunt down a guy that he had only heard legends of that can do a center deal. After two years he finally found him but he just completely up and left his family to find this guy that was previously only a legend to him. That is the kind of dedication he had to being the ultimate card master. He is such an interesting person to study up on.

I consider myself as a student of magic, everything that puzzles the curiosity is worth working on.
While i always warn people about seeking dragons, (cause most people are just blinded by the glimmers of this effects), i myself am involved into a study on whatever looks magic to me.
Actually, i enjoy discussing about an effect, and maybe we'll find our way through.
I'll be thinking about it!

(PS: i am working as well on a classic "myth" of magic, which is taking more than a year practising the sleights.
You'll have my permission to call me dumb when i'll get it done ^^ )

I do not believe the effect you have described is impossible , merely difficult . In fact, I have been experimenting with ideas based on patter since you first posted this thread. Vernon's story of dedication is inspiring. But memory is a fickle thing. We do not remember events, we remember the last time we remembered the event. His trick may have been more envolved then the story leads us to believe.

That is very true. I'm not sure who exactly told the story that became the legend but if it is true, the only two witnesses I believe were Cliff Green and Dai Vernon. Since they were only in their early teens at the most, their memory of the event could be pretty distorted. But in the end, legend seeking is what makes for some pretty fun adventures.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I have someone select a card from a forcing deck and when they put it back I tell them to continue thinking of that card. that way in a moment I say to them "What is the card you are thinking of?" But I do understand were you are coming from with only one card.

What I absolutely love about this effect is that there are some many different ways to pull it off; each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Some prefer to use the mentalism or hypnosis approach which I'm not particularly strong at but love seeing it pulled off successfully. Some prefer to use sleight of hand or card tricks to pull it off. I personally am going to try to create something in the style of Hugo Shelley and just go over the top to where my plot is as "clean" as possible. Basically what I want is for either a deck or a single card to be in view the whole time, never touched by me, and to be the named card that a spectator has previously named. I have an idea of how I want to do this but it will take years of study and development to build it unless Hugo Shelley himself can beat me to it. My dream is also to have the card examinable. Should pose for an interesting challenge.

But I'm really glad I decided to post this thread because I got way more out of it than what I thought. It's so interesting seeing different people's styles and approaches to this problem. I hope that I can one day add to the list although I doubt I would ever market my effect and would rather just keep it as a novelty for me to use when I need an effect on the go.
