Basically, yes. I want them to choose 6 red cards and 6 black cards and ask them to mix them up in some way, and still know which card is which colour.

My mind first went to sympathy as well. It wouldn't be as simple as marking all the black or red cards? Another, on the fly idea that came to mind was using a principal from Cosmos OOTW.

If all you need is a red black shuffle and not a false have you looked into something with stay stack.

I can't have any stacks here, I need the deck to be shuffled at the start - and the spec has to choose the cards, there's a different process that goes on during this time.

Chad Long's "Shuffling Lesson" could do the trick. The spec thinks you're showing them how to shuffle, but really they're stacking the deck themselves.

Hrm, that sounds like it could work. I'll have a look, thanks.

I can't use marked cards here because I have to be able to know which cards are red and which are black whilst the cards are under the cover of a tablecloth, handkerchief, pocket square, scarf or cravat (in my case, probably the last three, I love wearing those things!). I can however and do use them in another part of the effect. I'll look into Cosmos, I love the OotW plot. Thanks a lot for your help.

And, thanks to everyone who's offered their help here so far. Much appreciated. I'll get my first chance to test this routine out with the suggestion currently adopted tomorrow. Exciting!
