The Genesis Challenge - Essentials

Hey Guys,

Ive been a magician now for close to 3 years, and have only ever performed basic flourishing during this time. Since the release of the Trilogy, TheCuso Tutorials and now Genesis I have found a strong interest in Flourishing, but have never had much of an opportunity to practise this art.

With the recent release of Genesis - The Essentials I will now be using this opportunity to learn more about flourishing, and hope to be able to succed within it as I have with my magic.

For those who own Genesis (Download or DVD) if you are just starting flourishing, or you are an advanced flourisher I thought now would be a great opportunity for us to all learn together, and to help us all advance each other.

Each Friday I would like everyone who would like to join me, to post a video of what you have learnt over the previous week. Each week we will focus on one, or multiple moves and produce a short video displaying your skill only within that move, or a move developed around it.

Each video will be edited into this first post, and hopefully it will be a great learning tool for those who have purchased Genesis or intend to in the future.

Week One:
Mechanics Grip; Charlier Cut; Thumb Cut

The Mechanics Grip is the one of the most common grips used within Cardistry, and Magic. It is a complete Essential for learning, and understanding when following through Genesis.

The Charlier Cut is a basic move that most magicians or flourishes would know. It can be developed into larger flourishes in the future, and is a great base for a beginner.

The Thumb Cut is kind of like a backwards Charlier Cut. It is the more difficult move for this week, and will require slightly more practise.

This week should be a fairly simple week for us all, previous Flourishes should have little problem and may be able to adapt the three moves further.

For a beginner getting the Charlier and Thumb Cuts to be completed smoothly will take time, and practise it may take longer than a week if this is your first time!

Best of luck guys, Videos are to be posted by Midnight US EST on Friday the 20th.

If you dont own Genesis, you can purchase the Download or DVD now, or catch up with us in the future!

i think the stuff on the dvd is a little too simple for challenges like this, when 2&3 come out, then this would work because we could show real development with stuff like impossybil and more complex moves, but showing our charliers...

There are some weeks where some of the moves are not as 'simple' and for someone like myself with no flourishing experiance I thought it may help others to learn together :).

I was hoping to continue it further on the next volumes but thought there may be others in similar situations too me :).

Perhaps it will just be my own learning thread haha

I think this is a pretty cool idea. :) Ill do it. Just gotta get hold of a cam. While the Charlier and Mechanica Grip are 2 thugs I've known for the last 2 years, I think this is a pretty cool topic. I'll give it a go.

I will offer some form of prize to the most improved at the end of this first chapter aswell, for the ones who have followed for the majority of the challenge.

Don't do that. I'm tired of people only participating in events only because there is a prize involved or a chat because a certain well known magician may be there. I can't stand that. If you want to, you can. It's your event. Even so, I wish people would actively participate in these because THEY WANT TO. I remember the old Justin Miller chats. We would have around maybe 30 people per chat. Without him, the chats all of a sudden died. I tried to keep them alive, but all attempts failed. It made me realize why people really attended those chats. I think this is a good learning opportunity for people. (Including myself actually. It will kick me in the butt not to be lazy and practice knowing I gotta get a video up.:p I wanna learn and perfect everything in Genesis, and I see this kind of as my motivation.)

Just realized I slightly misunderstood this thread. I thought you were gonna edit all the clips together to form a massive Cardistry movie. I was incorrect.:p Still, this will be awesome. I think in the end we actually should make a massive T11 Community Cardistry video. That would be badass.

I think both ideas are great! If you want to compile a progress thread for yourself, it would be a good way to keep record of your growth and you're more than welcome to do so.

The collaboration idea would be stellar, we'd need to find a designated editor who has time to put all the videos together. There may or may not be prizes involved in some form of arbitrary selection of the respective participants. We can also make it by popular vote/decision.

I'd love to initiate some form of tournament here that will span over a long(er) period of time. This would be massive considering the amount of people that participate in these forums and would definitely break record numbers in terms of involvement. We'd definitely get a panel of judges spanning a multitude of styles and abilities to provide an unbiased review of each video. To keep things interesting, we'll make it optional to do an uncut routine; therefore, this will appeal to as many as possible. Videos will be reviewed in terms of the "overall" package: skill, speed, style, smoothness, and shine (that includes editing/production and while it will not be stressed as much as other factors, it may play a significant role in making or breaking the victory) I think it would be great!
